Hi need some advice with bjj
 
HI i just signed up with american top team in Coconut creek,FL i used to take jjj and judo that was years ago i have been to two classes already and i love it the problem is i gas out extremely fast and i end up having to sit out half the class after warming up and a few drills i am out and it is very embarrising i am quitting cigarrets i know that smoking has a big deal to me gassing out so fast and i have not been in shape for a while any suggestions on ways to help with my cardio anyone ever in the same position please help, Thank you bye

Yeah definately quit smoking,
also try running on the days u dont train, or in the morning if u train at night, if u keep it up you'll be surprised how fast your cardio will improve

When you quit smoking you will probably gain weight, so I would make sure that you are pushing yourself even harder when you think that you need to sit. The really great fighters will train until they can't walk back to their car, but that's part of training.

hey iron man thanks it sounds like you know what you are talking about i use to smoke 2 packs a day i am down to only 4 cigaretts a day today at training it was tough but i was able to keep up i noticed a huge difference today you are right about when you said i will gain weight once i quit any suggestions what would you do i am 5'11 and 225 pounds i am very husky but have some fat i used to body build and screwed my body up with hormones i stopped lifting about 1 and a half years ago and most of my muscle turned to fat should i start lifting also or should i stick to cardio when doing drills and etc i don't want to be fat so what should i do? Thanks

You should definitely get back into lifting, but with your build I suggest focusing on cardio.

When you say you stopped lifting do you mean that you stopped lifting completely?

Lifting and strength training is really an important part of grappling, and I like to think that it's alot more important than the cardio, but that's not really true. If you're going to be training in BJJ, you should be getting alot strength training just from your training. Add a little bit of weight training on top of that, but focus mostly on cardio, which will help you lose fat and keep you toned.

ok for the record.. Muscle CAN NOt turn to fat major misconception.. basicly all that happened is your muscles got out of shape and cellular size decreased along with strength.. you still have the same amount of cells, no change there and you will be surprised how quickly they bounce back . Cardio will help I also suggest adding some weight training.. low weights high reps decent speed kinda like a cardio weight work out.. try adding ankle and wrist weights when you run maybe a weight belt not alot of weight just 2-5 pounds you'll notice a huge difference when your not wearing them after a work out.. will build up speed as well..

thanks alot for the advice i have not lifted a wieght in about a year i feel my cardio going up i am down to 3 cigarets a day the school i go to American top team in Florida has muay thai and boxing classes i realy need to start losing weight i cannot keep up at 225 the weight division is just to much for me i want to lean out i have taken Miyama Ryu ju jitsu and judo for 3 years i was 14 at the time now i am 24 years old i always loved grappling eventually i want to compete what would be better for me muay thai or boxing they have some of the best coaches in both i never was a striker even as a kid i always would ground and pound but my stand up sucks which art do you think will be good for me i am going to start lifting weight again i used to play around with steroids since i was 16 so it is pretty tough to start lifting since the decrease in strength but my main goal is to get lean and in shape so i can train more and harder what are some of the good exercises to help balance,flexability, and coordination i read that i should stick to cable movements and push ups all kinds of body wieght exercise's i want to thank you guys for taking your time to help me i will be taking bjj 3 days a week the classes are 1 hour but after that class is a no gi class since my backround is in grappling i can go to the no gi class my friends at the school that are fighting already say that muay thai is better for me to take because it has much more devastating in the hands as well as feet what do you guys think with what kind of exercises i should do and also about the muay thai thank you so much

Muay thai vs Boxing

tough call, depends what u like basically,
if u just want to supplement groundwork i would say boxing, because, no matter wat anyone says, boxers have better hands than muay thai guys and u dont want to over complicate ur game.

However knees, elbows and the ability to at least defend kicks are all a necessary part of mma training. the other thing is muay thai does clinch work so if u prefer clinch take-downs (as apposed to shooting) then muay thai may fit your game easier.

like i said depends wat u like, maybe do both and see for yourself:dunno:

if possible train in both if you can get it.. you'll have great hands with lots of options in feet knees and elbows
