BJJ or Sambo

I am looking to learn some grappling, but in my area there are no BJJ schools but I found a place that teaches Sambo. I would like some feedback from anyone that has some first hand experience with Sambo. I know that BJJ is the most popular grappling art right now, and everyone seems to be taking it. How effective is Sambo? Is it comparable to BJJ and more importantly is it worth investing my money and learning it? I would appreciate any constructive feedback thanks. John

Though I do not know too much about Sambo I know that it is very good if you pursue a career in MMA. I believe you do learn grappling though with it. Keep us updated with a decision.

They are both very good fighting styles but i would choose BBJ over Sambo although Sambo is very good and if thats the only thing in your area take it for sure...Fedor and Aleksander Emelianenko have big back grounds in Sambo and they are 2 of the worlds top fighters.

Sambo is very much worth it.

Knowadays, if you watch MMA you'll learn some rudementary BJJ skills. Definitely take the opportunity to learn BJJ, because it's really important to know how to use the submissions, but it's even more important to know what submissions an opponent is going to be trying to use on you.

Sambo is a better style for modern MMA, in my opinion, because you learn takedowns that most opponents aren't used to dealing with and you learn submissions that some opponents have never seen before. It's one of the reasons why Andrei Arlovski was able to submit Tim Sylvia so quickly while Jeff Monson couldn't. When you have submissions an opponent hasn't seen before, you're way more likely to land them.

If you are looking at a career in MMA, definitely train in Sambo full time, but go to some BJJ classes and watch tape of BJJ fighters so that you see where they attack from most of the time and what the signs that they are setting up a submission are.
