Triangle Question

When finishing the triangle, what is the difference between just pulling down on the head and hugging around both the head and your own leg? If I'm not explaining the second method well enough, watch the way the guy finishes in this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0suiPw9xhXA

I don't think it really makes a difference. Also, check out this thread if you haven't already.

It's a personal preference issue. There should be an equal amount of pressure on the head in both techniques, so I doubt it makes a difference.

depending on leg strength I find that pulling down the head restricts the blood flow to the brain faster but this can only happen as long as your knees create a 90 degree angle with your hips. but when this angle is broken (ex. your opponent stacks you) you can also finish the triangle by hugging your knee. im not positive how this works but i believe its because when your squeze the triangle without the hand on the head your hips pop up a little which lessens the choke but by holding the knee your hips don't pop and your opponents posture stays slightly broken. im not triangle expert but thats my theory.

when you cut the proper angle i don't think it makes a diffrence. i been to a dave camarillo seminar long ago 2 or 3 years ago and that was the first time i learned you could finish consitantly without pulling directly on the head.

I like to pull the head. If the arm is crossed, pull his head into his own arm. If the arm is kind of open, it will be a lot harder to finish it, but try to pull his head into your leg. If the guy is a p*ssy he will tap from the second one...

Sometimes people pull on the legs because they can't really grab the head. Sometimes I get people in a triangle and the start to slip out a tiny bit so I grab my shin and pull.

I like the leg better. It's more clastrophobic and I feel like I get a better squeeze.

The main difference would be pulling on the head creates more of a 'crank' on the neck and can often in BJJ competitions be classified as a neck crank which can result in a disqualification. While pulling your legs together will create more pressure as you tighten the choke up, although you really shouldn't need to pull on anything if you have a properly secured triangle locked in.

I'd much rather grab their knee and pull it into my elbow. Cuts off blood flow a hell of alot faster and keeps them from stacking you.
