the proliferation of the color belt system in certain arts is largely unique to America, I hate testing for rank and so does everyone else I know, i'd rather just learn and improve the best I could in every class I go to. I much prefer some instructor's method of awarding belts or stripes when nobody expects it, that way theoretically the students would be trying hard and working hard all the time b/c they never know when they're being evaluated.

Thats how my place is, they never tell us when they just come in when they feel like it. Thats not often either, the last testing was December. Still, belt ranking are needed, they show you SHOULD have knowledge, it gives you a boost of confedence, and you get a little more respect. Its like winning a pro game and not getting a trophy, what is the point of that? In that case just play at the park. Idk thats my theory atleast.

Not a fan of the belt system. Where I train, there are no ranks in Muay Thai and the BJJ belts are handed to you whenever the instructor feels that you've reached that level.

I know people who will buy the next belt for motivation purposes but that's usually purple to brown or brown to black

Formal testing for rank results in cramming to memorize all kinds of sh*t and then forgetting it. This has happened to me several times regardless of how often I go to class and practice outside class, which I do, a lot.

At my school we don't test for belts. Our coach gives it to us when he feels that were ready.

to me the biggest chump move is when an instructor (who isnt a rightful black belt) buys his belt through a name, gracie or other by offering to bring them in so many times a year for seminars in such which would make the giver of rank alot of money, plus the instructor gets money for having a rank and name on their school....this happens all the time

also you can buy a belt any where....to me belts mean nothing. trophies mean a lot more.

bjj and submission grappling are performance based so really you dont move up in rank from "belt tests"

muay thai (aside from traditional) has no rank much like boxing, its just your as good as you are.

i recently told my coach not to give me rank because i think its stupid. he just recently decided to start giving rank to people.

i think this is kind of like a poser/wannabe habit, would anyone else agree?
Who gives a f*ck about another guy's ranking?

My brother started taking MMA classes the other day at a local gym, different than where I train, because he can't keep up with me, I'm too harsh on him and my gym won't let him train with the adults. I went down and was talking to the MMA instructor down there, who's probably in his mid-twenties (a little older than I am) and we decided to roll a little bit.

He, apparently, has a "blackbelt" in some karate styles and a purple belt in jiu-jitsu (higher than what I have) and I tapped him twice pretty easily, and if we had put on the full gear, so that I had been more comfortable banging with him, I probably would have knocked him out without much difficulty either.

The rank doesn't matter, the quality of the game matters, and if you can kick the guys ass, who gives a f*ck what belt he's wearing. You know you're better, and once you've beaten him, he knows it too.

I hope not. The full account is in my training log.

Still, the point is clear.
