swpthleg where do you train?
A small tkd dojang in upstate NY. it is the only place that teaches tkd locally. the other choices are lamer than lame sport karate (cobra kai shizzle) and judo but that's by invitation only. Neither my dojang nor the judo group advertises. BTW my teacher is in the process of revamping the testing process b/c one of the non-lame karate instructors in the area (gojuryu) has joined him teaching there and I know he was amazed by the 5 hour marathons that were our tests (With less than 10 ppl testing, even),

For sure, a friend of mine in Brasil who was a very experienced purple belt at the time bought a brown belt and started wearing it around the house for "good luck" haha and it worked since he got his Brown the day before leaving Brasil. I should try that myself

But really, the kid was probably planning to show it off to his friends or something to seem 'cool' although if that were the case you wonder why he didn't just buy a brown or black one then.. Maybe purple is his favourite colour?

you should show some respect too, after all anyone who claims to teach or know BJJ can traice the lineage back to a person with a last name gracie.

stop being ignorant.
Incredibly stupid statement, and frankly not on point.

Every BJJ instructor will trace his lineage back, but that doesn't mean he earned his belt. There are plenty of guys who buy belts in BJJ, and that's coming from a long time BJJ practitioner.

There's an instructor right up the street from me in Fresno who claims to be a purple belt, but I can tap him while giving up an 80 pound weight advantage and a belt rank.

Why?

It's not just because I come from a school that regularly turns out a dozen US Open champs. It's because I earned my belt and he bought his from Royce after a few private lessons.

That might sound disrespectful, and it is. I don't respect guys like that, but denying that they exist is just stupid.

So what? Because he doesn't treat the Gracie's like gods?

I like the Gracie's. I'm a huge fan of Helio and have gone as far as to say that I think he's done more for martial arts than anyone else, certainly in recent history.

Royler Gracie is the best martial artist I've ever worked with. Does that mean I think his brothers would be above selling a belt? Hell no.

as for the homo you can tap right up the road from your house. YOU said he claims to be a purple. I says he claims to be gracie trained. but like i said. if you want to check flip over his belt and look at the tag. gracie belts giving by gracies say.... gracie. check his belt or tell me his name there is a quicker way to check his credintials.
See, this is where you get stupid.

He doesn't claim to be a Royce Gracie purple belt. He is a Royce Gracie purple belt. Royce gave him his purple belt, and he's certified.

The guy's name is Tosh Cook. You're welcome to check him out.

all of you sound like a bunch of haters. its like driving a vette and saying you wouldnt own a chevy.
We sound like haters? Because we don't take a moment of silence every time we say the name "Gracie."

It's a great martial arts system. I've built most of my grappling around my BJJ, and especially on the fundamentals of the guard game that guys like Royler and Rickson preach so thoroughly.

I don't hate the system. I love the system, and I'm very proud to trace my own training lineage two generations back to the family that created it.

But everybody has shortcomings. If acknowledging that there are shady parts of the Gracie tradition makes me a hater (and there are far, far shadier parts than selling belts), then so be it.

Jeez...did God just +rep GJJ? He just jumped almost to a full green rep bar as I was trying to help him get to a full red.

Anyways, as for the belt that was bought, it could have been for anything...you should check with the guy to see what he was going to use it for.

I'll mention it to Royler the next time I see him (he really likes NorCal and I think my instructor is going to host him for the next six months). I imagine he'll agree that it's screwed up that this guy bought a belt, but maybe he'll be able to explain why they do it.

If I ever meet Royce, I'll tell him that I don't understand how he could sell a belt to a guy who sucks that badly. Still, selling belts is the least of Royce's ethical worries right now.

As for this notion that they would want to fight me because I don't like the practice of selling belts, that's incredibly juvenile and demonstrates exactly how little you know about the Gracie family and their sense of respect and honor.

If the best defense you have left is "Oooh, the Gracies r gunna kick ur ass," then I'm wasting my time here.

Yeah, my bad, Tosh just promoted to brown belt. Try there.

Where are you getting this bullsh*t? Would you like me just to post the link to Tosh's website? Or just the picture of Tosh and Royce smiling together?

Whether you respect my grappling or not (though since you've never seen it, and probably aren't aware that I was made moderator of this forum, the training techniques section, because of my grappling background), whining about it and throwing out this crap is a waste of everyone's time and misses the point.

But like you said, you don't care about the point.

Keep it coming, keyboard warrior.

the reason i pick at you is you are 18. doing the math when bjj was brought to the US (by the gracies) you were 1. how much experience can you possibly have. not counting your high school fight club. seriously, you make your self sound reduculous. watching all the videos in the world dont make you a pro. congrats on the moderator thing though. impressive
You've openly claimed to be training in BJJ for 1 year, which means that I've been training with adults in BJJ for 3 years longer than you have. I'm not even going to go into when I started my training (much, much younger) because that's a waste of my time and energy.

I don't claim to be a grappling savant. In fact, that's sort of the point. I'm not good enough that I should be submitting a guy who's getting a brown belt from Royce.

What makes me knowledgable isn't that I've fought a lot (though I have, since I've been competing smokers at least a couple of times a month for three years), it's that the crap I talk about works.

That's what gets you respect, demonstrating knowledge. The same way demonstrating skill gets you respect on the mat.
