buying belts

recently at my bjj club, one of the white belts decided to buy a purple belt from my instructor..the belt was bought not for the promotion/grade or anything like that but just as a thing to keep for a bluebelt myself and seeing that transaction made me go what the ****? in my head..
i think this is kind of like a poser/wannabe habit, would anyone else agree?

That's really, really, stupid. Why the hell would a white belt want to own a purple belt? He should just work on his technique and hopefully he'll be good enough one day to earn that rank.

some people dont have what it takes.
you can tell that person probably hates coming to practice and hates training, but wants to be good without any work. Its mental weekness.
He probly went home to his friends with his belt talking all tough and knowledgable

Why'd your instructor agree to sell it to him? I thought in BJJ you get the belt handed to you when you earn it?

If he just wanted it to hang up on a wall, why stop at purple? He should have gone all the way and bought black belt and put like 10 stripes on it.

maybe he has a cousin that is a purple with a belt that is so beat up it is hanging on by a thread, so he picked it up as a gift for him. i would never assum. and if it bothers you that much keep chatting online till you build enough nuts to ask you sensei wtf, and ask the guy that bought the belt what he intends on doing with it.

the problem with belt colors is everone is sooooooooo focused on what color belt they have and what color he has. i was told that when you get your black is when you begin to learn.

"every second your not training, he is..... and he is doing it, just to kick your ass"

my teacher said that also. However if someone wanted to buy a belt he would def. want to know why and you sure as hell wouldn't be allowed to wear it in class until you'd actually earned that rank.

My philosophy for BJJ is, I am not training for Blue,Purple, or Brown I am training for Black. Until I am a high level Brown I am not gonna concern myself with belts. Is it frustrating to see your teammates passing you by? Yes, but most of the time, I don't feel like they are much better than me.

As far as I'm concerned a belt is just something that holds your pants up. It might not be that way to everyone though - maybe he's hanging it up on his wall at home and using it for inspiration. Maybe he's giving it to a friend that lost theirs. If it bothers you that much, just ask him. I, personally, don't see what the big deal is, as long as he's not wearing it to class or trying to act like a bigshot.
