Tips for Butterfly guard
I was wondering if anyone had tips for butterfly guard. Both how to get into it and how to hold it.
I'm pretty solid and open, rubber, and closed and doing things from those but I could really use some help with my butterfly.

Taken from another site:

General principles:
- Always look to either arm-drag or get underhook(s).
- Transition to X-guard whenever possible
Attacks:
From the arm-drag: Take the back, brabo choke or reverse butterfly sweep.
From the underhook: Attempt standard butterfly sweep (initiating a chain of attacks)
From double underhooks: Rock up, preferably to establish X-guard
Misc: Attack with guillotine (head-only), sweep to guillotine side and follow into mount
Sit up and shoot for double if opponent has his weight too far back
Some re-counters:
- Opponent blocks standard butterfly sweep by posting leg --> Underhook leg and get X-guard, grab same-side wrist and push hand through to trip while continuing sweep, or attempt reverse butterfly sweep
- Opponent 'supermans' and posts with hands to block reverse butterfly sweep --> Establish X-guard
- Opponent counters guillotine by passing the guard --> Keep control of his neck and chin, 'swim' with other hand and roll him into a N/S choke
- Opponent counters the X-guard by removing or blocking your top hook (at the groin) --> Move the hook down to his instep and sweep him with a banana peel

Open meaning Spider?
If we are talking gi, look out for guys trying to grab your pants and walk by your guard. Always lead with your head so they can not flaten you out.(If you don't get this leading with you head keeps your hips behind you, preventing them from laying on you). When I get butterfly I look for the arm drag, when that does not work I establish my hooks and look for under or over hooks, when I get that, I attempt a simple sweep. This is very important, when attempting a butterfly sweep, you have to fall to your side while tucking you bottom elbow. Never fall to your back.
If you need more help just ask. But be more specific next time.

Yea I meant my Spider guard.
Anyway sorry about not being very specific I had just gotten back from the gym and was pretty pissed about how bad my butterfly guard was.
Yea basically my biggest problem is not letting guys just get right to half guard and your tip about not letting my opponent grab my pants. Do you have any other tips to keep my hooks and not get passed?

When guys are going for your pants you need to hand fight and either arm drag or collar drag. When you are far out, you can do the Marcelo way of keeping your hooks in by keeping you heels in. If they are far out keep your hooks in and look to arm drag, when they come in thats when you put in your hooks. Never get flaten thats when you guard will get passed.

Sure.
Start by making sure that your opponent is close to you, using your upper body to keep them in tight and controlling one arm, with another hand on the belt.
Keep your head down, which will keep you from rolling over on your neck.
Keep your knees against your opponents body, on their ribs.
Make sure to scoot your butt in to your heels when you go for a sweep.
Not one of my better positions, unfortunately, but hopefully that's a helpful starting point.
