College grappling club?

I discovered MMA less than a year ago. I want to start training in wrestling and BJJ. I found out that the college I am going has a grappling club. It says people with no previous experience are allowed to join, but they must sit and watch two meetings first. Is it worth a shot? I know it takes years to master something like BJJ, but could I pick up on the basics quick enough to keep up with the people around me?

Try it out, and don't worry about keeping up with other people. The only performance you should be measuring yourself against is your own: with everyone else, all sorts of other factors come into it, like size, weight, strength, athletic aptitude, how many times a week they train etc.

Its easy to find reasons not to train, so I'd suggest you just go and check out the class. If this place turns out not to be to your liking, judo tends to be a good option (cheap and widely available).

If they allow people of any experience level I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one with minimal experience so i'd definitely take advantage of the program at your school.

The answer to both your questions is: hell yeah.

As has already been mentioned, if there are beginners showing up on a regular basis, then you'll have plenty of people that are at your level and will be competitive with you, and you will pick up the basics over the first few months, at least to the point where you will begin to feel competent.

Go for it.
