A few questions

OK so I've been doing BJJ about 4 sessions a week for the last week and a half, and about 1 a week for the last month and a half.

I can see myself progressing, however I have one big problem. I can't seem to open my opponents gaurd. I dread shooting in because while I pretty much always end up on top, I also end up in closed gaurd. My class doesn't allow can openers or slams, which also happen to be the only 2 techniques I know to break gaurd. It basically leaves me defending the whole time. What are some effective techniques for a bigginer to use in order to open gaurd other then posturing up (which always leeds to me getting swept), can openers, and slams.

Next question, I can't seem to close me gaurd for some reason. I'm double jointed at the knee, so while I can bend my knees outward so that my heels touch my hips, I can't bend my knees inward towards the croch so that my ankles are on ontop of the other. Not only does this make it hard for me to close gaurd, it also makes it harder to secure a proper triangle, or body triangles, or rubbergaurd, or high gaurd, or gogo/omoplatas. Any advice on getting any of these positions (but most imporantly closing gaurd).

Final question, Ricardo Viera is coming to my gym soon for 3 seminars. However, it is 25 pounds a semminar. Is it worth paying for?

Pushing down on the knee or digging your elbow into your opponent's thigh muscle might encourage them to open their guard. You could gamble with baiting them for a triangle and slipping past (this is a gamble).

As to the double-jointed issue I really can't provide any help. Maybe use a body triangle instead of the closed guard if you are a lanky guy?

if using a gi
step 1 hold the opponet by the hip with ur left hand and hold lapel with ur right hand
2. put right knee under opponents left butt cheek
3. lift left leg (yours) up and scoot backwards, with ur left elbow tight, on the inside of opponents right thigh

stand-up break
1. grab opponents right arm and keep it tight under ur left arm, which is holding his lapel(ur forearm holds his arm down)
2. rock ur body and put ur left leg up.
3. turn more towards to the left to lift ur right leg up.
4. now holding the opponents sleeve with ur left hand, push the left leg down with ur right hand.

for ur 2nd question
i dont know how much 25 pounds is

As far as your questions go, go to the Back to Basics thread. I've covered some basic passes. If you have questions, feel free to ask them there, as I can index everything easier.

Yeah, it is. I love working with new instructors. You learn a lot and get to see a new style of jiu-jitsu.

Twenty five pounds is not that bad a deal (having done the exchange rate in my head and acknowledging that we pay about $85 for higher end instructors, which (if I remember right) was the cost of the last seminar I did with Royler Gracie.

Thanks a lot everyone. I do have 1 more question for you guys though. How long did it take for you to get your first sub? I've been to atleast 8 sessions so far and I still haven't even come close, which is very very demoralizing.

Depends on who you're rolling with. I caught my first one my first night training with the adults, but my training partner was even newer, so that wasn't a big deal.

Just keep working and it'll happen.
