stretching before class

How much stretching should be done? Deep stretching? Should I just warm up?

I know for some activities stretching prior to starting can cause injury, like in weight lifting. Any ideas?

I see some guys do deep stretches before class but personally I prefer to just do warmup motions like kicking up with a straight leg (hamstring), making circles with my arms (shoulders) and swinging my leg from side to side (hips). Just think back to middle school P.E. class and do those warmups they made you do. ;) I save the yoga for after practice.

Gainful stretching is done after class. Just warm up before class with light stretching and get your blood pumping.

Yeah there's really no point stretching before class, with your muscles cold and stiff, it's easy to pull a muscle stretching before class. Stick to warming up before class, and stretch a bit AFTER class when your muscles are already warm and looser.

Do what BJ Penn does. Warm up before training. Try stretching every so often after training, but primarily do deep stretches at the end of the day outside of training.

Yoga is very helpful, but like I said, after not before or during.

yeah some jumping jacks, running around, circular motions with arms and feet are okay with light not deep stretching

Since my muscles are so tight and compact i do both. I love streching before glass it just feels good and helps my legs get loosend up. Then we do warmups. Then after class i stretch again to avoid muscle sorness.
