I am a fairly slim/skinny with a high muscle % and low bf%. I don't have a belt or any formal submission training I've only practiced techniques that I learned via internet videos. So I am not qualified to answer this question, but:
It occured to me that by having a big belly(Roy Nelson:serious01you would be able to create more leverage against the arm giving you a larger range of motion to bend it against the joint.
I was wondering if anyone here has a black-belt or other qualifications(big belly) could tell me if this is a correct observation?
In answer to your question... No. The lift to make an arm bar comes from lifting your hips. The arms fulcrum is on your pelvis. Lifting your hips increases the distance between their wrist and your body, giving you more space to pull against their elbow.
I could see where someone who doesn't know better might think so, but to me I would think a big belly would actually make it harder to get the armbar. You think about the angle needed to complete the submission and the belly could possible hinder you from straightening the arm, not to mention it's a whole lot harder to lift you hips having to lift that big ole belly.
I can attest that wearing a cup gives a little bit more leverage on the armbar, as well as a better sense of security when live rolling and you want to lock it down quickly.
Well I have a belly and a black belt in judo. And I can tell you that a belly is not an advantage. As some others might have pointed out, you get leverage from your hips with the jujigatame(armbar)technique.
Basically, when you lye down to extend your opponents elbow joint, this joint is lower than the belly button, about 3 inches lower.
If there is a technique where one could be advantaged by a belly, its called ''hara gatame''. Google it and you will find it.
