Problem with falling to side in rear mount

My primary training partner is a fellow white belt, and he has been training for six months in contrast to my sole month of training. However, my wrestling background has helped me in scramble situations and I normally have a dominant position on him. I am having trouble capitalizing, however.

Whenever I get a rear mount on him, we end up falling to my back, or to the side, and from there we initiate another scramble with me ending up in mount or half guard or, worse, kneeling facing each other like we started 2 mins ago.

What can I focus on to keep him still and stable between my hooks so I can work my RNC?

To me back control is mainly about the hand grips. The hooks do well to keep them in, but the hand controls seem to be forgotten a lot of times. What I like to do working for the RNC is work an over/under grip. Whichever hand is on the over side is the one you want on the bottom of your grip...you want the under grip side on top. Reason for that grip is a lot of times people will reach up and try to pull your hands down. If they reach up and pull down they are going to pull down your under grip hand and the over grip hand can slide right in for the choke.

As long as you keep a super tight over/under it's going to be really hard for him to move even if you take both hooks out.

I think it's more "natural" feeling for most people to use the double under grip. If you have excellent hooks then it can be a somewhat effective grip if done properly. What I like to do with the double under is grab both of my opponents wrists (same side). Once I get that grip I have a pretty nice grip on the armbar if they roll out either direction. It has it's place, but the over/under is much better to control them and keep them locked into the position. Being that you are knew to BJJ I'd focus first on being able to establish and hold the position...once you can hold your partner in the position start working for some subs.

Also if you have the over/under and you feel as though you are losing the position switch it up to the wrist control grips and wait for the armbar. Just remember that if you are laying on your back or your side the armbar is very tough, it's best to keep them sitting up.

Another trick that Tim Credeur showed me that he does a lot is when people lay back on you and put all their weight on you. Go on the under side and secure a half Nelson. Once you have the Nelson kick out the opposite side foot and roll into mount while snaking the Nelson around the neck...you end up in mount with a nice guillotine choke.

Hope that helps some.
