U.S. Open 2009

One of my old training partners just posted some video of himself competing in the whitebelt division of this year's U.S. Open.

Kevin Dadik (blue gi in both matches) is going to be a force in the years to come. The guy trains four or five days a week and is really a bluebelt level competitor (and, hopefully, will get his bluebelt soon).

Kevin submitted both of his opponents to win his division of the U.S. Open.

Match #1

Match #2

So, congrats to Kevin.

Bout two years.

Though, I will say this, he spent his entire summer in the gym getting ready. He was doing 8+ sessions a week for a couple of months. As someone who had essentially a full time job over the summer I was very jealous, but that's one of the benefits of him still being in high school.

Yea, that's one of the tricky things about saying stuff like "I've been doing BJJ for a year". Some guys go and train 1 or 2 times a week and then there are guys that train 6-7 days a week.

Two years at least 5 times a week and he's still a white belt? Yikes that's a strict coach lol.

Eduardo's a beast of a coach. He hasn't always trained five times a week. He's in high school and can't pull that off. But he was doing between six and eight over the summer.

I'm telling you guys, though, he's the future. Kevin Dadik is the next Robert Drysdale.

It all depends on your association where I'm at. There is one school under Leo Xavier down here and they will give blue belts in a year or less training two days a week. There is a Gracie Barra school down here and they told me that sometimes they'll give blue belts in 6 months.

My school is Carlson Gracie under Tim Credeur and it's about always 2 years minimum to get your blue and you have to prove you deserve it...very hard to get a blue. We have one guy that's been doing BJJ for almost 4 years and still doesn't have his blue yet. I also know a couple of guys that didn't get their blues until they had been training for 4 years. That's not saying you can't get it faster though because a couple of us got our blues in a year (I was 11 months), but we trained 5-6 days a week and learn fast. We also went out and trained in wrestling and Judo on the side to improve our BJJ games.
