Im starting JiuJitsu this wednesday, have some questions.

Ok first off I have no idea what all is required at this place. I heard about the place from an acquaintance and got a brochure. I'm showing up with some cash and in workout clothes and going from there.

Questions: (im asking in your experience, obviously no 2 gyms can be the exact same)

1. What do you guys tend to do at your gyms?

2. Can dudes grapple with girls?

3. Do you get sweat on a lot while on the ground?

4. Is there a gayness factor? Not trying to be insulting/offensive but are there some typical criteria to follow when im on my back and a dudes on top of me?

5. Is it weird to start, or will I become acquainted with guys being in these positions with me?


Also im not a homophobe, I have gay friends and I've even kissed a dude (it was for a goddamn good reason now stfu) but I was sexually molested when I was a kid by a dude so that might come into play.

1. Not sure exactly what you mean. We do probably 20-30 minutes of warm up, another 45 minutes or so of technique and then roll for another 30-45 minutes.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. Absolutely not. You are usually far more concerned with getting the guy off of you or not getting tapped out than whether or not the dude has a hard on.

5. Weird? Maybe. The weird part is more than likely going to be having your ass handed to you for the first few months. Stick with it and don't be so paranoid.

1. Class will start with a warm up, which contains some shrimping, hip mobility stuff, jumping jacks maybe, some running, etc. After that, usually the instructor will show a technique, like a guard pass or something, and you will drill it for a while. After that, usually there is free rolling.\

5. No it's not weird, you get used to it. Don't you watch MMA already? How do you think Bjj is gay, yet you watch MMA and wanna train? Lol

1. The few sessions I've been to we did some stretching, then some warm up drills like taking shots, hip stretching stuff, running, etc. Like Wakkudb said, your instructor will show you a guard pass, sweep, subbmission, etc, and you'll drill with a partner. Finding a partner isn't hard, but it's better if you scope out someone around your size before you get started and approach them. After drilling you will go live. It's always very fun for me.

2. I never grappled with women. That seems like it would be very awkward. Women were never in my class. I highly doubt you will.

3. Yes, if you're worried about sweat then you probably shouldn't get into grappling or MMA or any sport with physical exertion.

4. I guess if you have never done a combat sport it may be wierd to have a man mounting you, but to me it's not wierd at all. You won't be worried about how gay you look when your joints and/or bones/ligaments may be in danger of snapping.

5. It's really not wierd at the beginning. You just find a partner and go. If you don't know what you're doing then I'm sure your partner will and they can help you out. Everyone I've grappled with has been fine.

And on a side note I've never kissed a guy. What the hell xeberus...lol.

seriously just relax, i grapple all the time with dudes there is no gayness factor. one thing you don't want to do is like lets say he does something to yell out "thats ******* gay!"

but i mean it's your first class so i bet when you go there they'll spend a little time with you showing you the ropes and what not.

when you i recommend you bring a little towel and water, you'll be good :]

dont worry about the gayness thing everyone will be wearing cups, and like previous posters said there is way too much to think about when rolling gayness will not be on your mind.

1. Where I go, we do a shit ton of cardio lol. Like 30 min a 1 hour class, then about 50min in a two hour class. Then, we do Technique for about 50min, then 20min of rolling or king of the mat.

3. Somewhat, depends who you roll with. I don't sweat that much, but a few of the guys I roll with a lot do. But it really doesn't bother you, because the guy is trying to submit you lol.

4. Nope, again, the guy is trying to submit you, its sort like a fight. If a guy was to tackle you, and try to submit you, would you say ewww?
5. Yes, most of the guys I train will are pretty good friends now. And I have only been training for just over a month.



Edit: Oh ya, it was stated above to get a cup. Please make sure you have it lol. I didn't have one for like a week because I am at college and don't have car. Nothing is worse than having to let up because when you tried to armbar the kid his elbow when right into you balls.

We usually spend 10-15 mins of warmup drills, followed by 30-40 mins of techniques then the last 30-40 mins is sparring (best part )

2. Can dudes grapple with girls?

I'm not sure about other gyms, but where I train the girls are very tough and our instructor always puts them with guys (because there is only a few girls).

3. Do you get sweat on a lot while on the ground?


It depends if you sweat much, but keep in mind that in sparring it is not uncommon for both of you to be sweating a lot. I've had instances when the other guy was on top of me, and I basically had a shower of sweat dropping down, not nice.

I don't know about other people, but for me, not at all. A lot of people have asked me this but I've never seen it that way.

Same as above. For me, it was never weird but if it is at first, you will most likely get used to it.

We will learn moves for 40-50 mins (doing them on eachother) and train for 10-20 mins. If it's the advanced class we will train for a little longer.

Yes, it's not viewed as a sexual thing but it is only allowed if the girl is comfortable. Since you're new then I wouldn't suggest just walking up to a girl to roll lol.

Yes, take baths religiously after practice. 4 letters... MRSA

Not at all. You are worried about getting to a better position and tapping the guy out. Now when you try the moves on your girl at night THEN you can be sexual lol. Teach her the triangle choke lol

It's a little nerve racking if you roll with some guy that has an ego. It depends on your coach too. If your coach is cool then he'll put you with an older student and have them work with you on basics. You should not be free rolling your first day... It wouldn't be fun for you.

1. Same typical routine as other posters.

2. I have grappled with girls on only a couple of occasions and yes it was slightly akward to get triangled and "owned" by a girl, lol.

3. If you wear a Gi it typically soaks up most of the sweat.

4. Being a typical young male and having hard ons pop up at the slightest breeze I was slightly worried about this one to before I started. But now nothing gives me a bigger softy than some dude trying to choke me out.

5. Youll get used to it for sure. Your mind will be focused on improving your position, submission defense, ect.

P.S. As cmfisher said rolling will be hell for a few months and you will likely get owned by nearly everyone but stick with it.
