Like with that blue belt, I rolled out of a submission for the first time seemingly automatically to avoid something he was doing that put pressure on my left arm. and then when i pulled off the arm bar it just happened. Roll more, train more, practice more, drill more.
Yeah I know those are basically all almost the same thing.
That autopilot is just you recognizing what is coming at you and reacting in a way you have practiced to get out and counter it. The more time you put into training the smoother rolling gets and the more things you recognize and counter.
Eventually it breaks down to chess on the mat, as soon as you start you being playing out what techniques your partner will throw at you and how he will set it up and you will play out how you will counter and setup your subs on him then how he will counter etc. It all becomes "counter, counter, counter, counter, counter, gotcha!" At least thats how it is for me.
