Generally, once your opponent gets a sub in you're f*cked. Unless you don't care about your body at all, and then all you can do is try to muscle through it and hope that your arm doesn't break.

As for not getting in one, I would keep your hands in front of your body so that they don't get caught off to the side where you lose your core strength.

cradle the arm the other guy is going for, or hold on to your belt with the arm he has, he is focused on a key lock so work your legs through his arms depending on the space between you and him & his arms and your flexability

Try this.

Don't shower for a full week before the match.

This an effective counter to nearly every submission with the exception of an opponent who hasn't showered for two weeks and is wearing the same gear.

Hope this helps.

I used to get caught in keylocks a LOT!

I had a bad habit of keeping my arms away from my body. Now, I work for sub/position, and bring my arms back in when ever I'm not using it.

If I do get caught, I try to muscle out for a few seconds. If I can't, I tap.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't been caught in a keylock since I tried it out.

I've also noticed that this same technique also rear works for the rear naked choke as well.

Very effective.
