New Canadian Kid

Hey guys, I've always been a fan of MMA, UFC, boxing, kickboxing, etc, and just recently I have seriously considered joining a camp/class for MMA. I am not expecting to being anywhere close to good in my first few years. I am aware how long it takes to become a solid fighter, but I am very eager to learn and fascinated with MMA. Any tips you can give me? What should I expect? Will I like it? Thanks guys!

Hey Withers, welcome to the forum! :)

The best tip I can give you is just go for it. You'll find that any good MMA gym will be more than accomodating to new members and if you listen, and dont go in with an ego you will be kicking ass sooner than you think.

Welcome to the forum man!

Check out El Bresko's (MMAF's own!) recent interview with JJ Ambrose...

He gives some nice advise to guys starting out in the world of MMA.

Good luck with the training! When you get a fight under your belt get it recorded and send it to a staff member. You can then get your MMAF profile updated from normal member to 'MMA fighter' which comes with a cool userbar and all the privileges of a Premium Membership.

Welcome to the forum man.

I never knew the MMA Fighter-banner came with all the privileges of a Premium Membership. Thats cool.

Thanks for the welcoming everybody! What are your opinions on some "must-have" equipment (not clothing/gear) for my home? Heavy bag? Grapple dummy? Anything like that?

HitOrGetHit 01-29-2013 05:44 PM

Welcome to the forum. If you want home equipment, I would definitely invest in a heavybag. Grapple dummy is good, but they are somewhat pricey for nice ones.

Grapple dummy...haha...that's getting pretty hard core there. All you need are wraps, gloves, shin pads, and you're good to go. Mouth piece and head gear comes later after about a year or so if you're ready to spar. Just relax and enjoy it.

Thanks guys! Last question, lol. Should I be learning BJJ by itself for the first little while? I have no problem doing that, because most "mma" schools near me that teach MMA do bjj one day, wrestling the next, striking, etc. Would it be more effective to focus on just one, like BJJ?

No_Mercy 01-30-2013 07:44 AM

Most focus on Muay Thai & BJJ. Within those two classes they'll teach boxing and some wrestling. Have fun! You'll find that it's quite the work out.

Awesome that sounds good to me!
