Red face New to the world

Hey everyone. I'm fairly new to the world of MMA; I only started watching UFC a year ago with the last "Ultimate Fighter" series.

I am however interested in at least giving it a try. Hell I'm young so I figure give it a go and see if I go crying home to my mum lol.

If anyone can give any advice about how to get started please let me know. I've heard rumours that their is an MMA gym in my area but since none of my friends are into it they are of no help finding it lol. I'm also curious of health and saftey etc as I have to wear glass full time and I'm not sure if there are any places that will let me compete with bad vision.

Anyway I've spraffed on long enough, so thanks for readying

Welcome! I can't help with how to get into MMA because I'm just a poser who watches fights, but you've come to the right place- You'll surely get some answers here!

Hey bud, its great to have you here, welcome to MMAF!

If you have any questions or concerns, don't be affraid to hit up a mod.

I suggest you try finding out what style of martial arts suits you best and start from there. Are you a striker or a grappler? But remember, the point of Mixed Martial Arts is to incorporate all(or most) styles into one.

The core styles for MMA are, Striking(Muay Thai/KickBoxing/Boxing), Grappling(Jiu-Jitsu/Judo/Sub-wrestling) and Wrestling(Greco-roman/Amateur/freestyle/Catch).

Other arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Karate or Kung Fu are used more as an accent to your style than anything else. So just remember to take your necessary deciplines and stay fit, because cardio is a BIG BIG factor in MMA.

Best of luck to ya!

I wear contacts, and they're fine for the most part. Every once in a while, a thumb or a knuckle will catch you just right and knock the contact out of position, but I've never had one fly out or not line itself back up.

Some day, I'll pay someone to point lasers into my eye and make them all better, but until then...

As for getting started in training, do it. Whether it's MMA, TKD, BJJ, or wrestling. It's all good for you.

Thanks for the response guys all your advice is fantastic.

I've been looking into starting Kick boxing and maybe moving into Mi Tai as I know a guy who swears by it lol so I think I'll try starting there. Best place to learn I guess as I can get that whole first pro hit out the way and see if I'm still standing lol.

And cheers for the advice Jasvll. I wear contacts as well but my concern with wearing them in the ring is if my eyes swell up after some punches, or whatever. I mainly wanted to find out if places will let you fight with poor vision anyway because other than blood or thumbs to the eye you don't really hear about anything obstructing fighters vision so I've had no way of learning.

There are fighters in the UFC who competed with contacts in.
