I want to learn how to fight..

I'm a complete newbie, I have no previous martial art knowledge and I want to learn how to defend myself. I really like the idea of ground fighting. Would brazilian jiu jitsu be a good starting art to study?

BJJ is more of a technical discipline than just "ground fighting" there are no punches thrown and all you can do is submit your opponent.

I should've made myself a bit more clear I'm sorry.
I basically just want to learn how to defend myself. If someone wants to fight me, I would just like to know how to finish it the fastest way possible. I figured if I learn BJJ I could take someone down and choke them out and be done with it.

lol you can but choking random people out on the streets could be dangerous but you should probably take up some muay thai and bjj. Muay thai for standing up and bjj for ground

the problem with submissions in street fighting is that guys that you fight have friends there helping them
watch kimbo fight gannon
gannons choking him and all his "boys" come rushing in to help him

i love submission wrestling
its my favorite aspect of MMA
but for street fights take up some muay thai

If you want the fastest way to end a fight, you should go with Muay Thai.. you'll be able to finish fights with your fists, knees, elbows and shins.

if you want to learn how to fight do not listen to Tito for the love of god don't, take boxing or muay thai hell even judo mixed in would be great, it takes time and dedication. now i do not condone street fighting it should only be done when absolutely necessary and choking people out in the middle of the street is bad for two reasons I'm sure you do not want to be charged and secondly i doubt you want to have your teeth kicked in by a couple of the guys buddies.

One thing to remember when you are learning how to defend yourself never think ok now i can kick this guys ass, it's better to think now if need be i can defend myself. A guy who thinks he is the shit because he has boxed for 6 months quickly realizes that he is not the shit when he gets a busted nose and bruised ribs lol. ego is bad confidence is good take your time and most of all BE A SPONGE!
