Newb and Hooked

Hey all,

I'm new to MMA but my friends have been obsessed for years now. They've been talking non-stop about GSP and Mir and Nogueira, I'm just now discovering how serious these fighters are. Don't practice any disciplines currently, but I got hooked by the story of the Gracies and their vale tudo tournaments in the 20's. I'm wondering if there's other up and comers I should know about (I repeat: newb) aside from the bruisers I've already checked (Liddell, Couture, Emilianenko, Kimbo, Hughes) Anybody going to Minneapolis for 87? I heard Lesnar's fighting Heath Herring...true?

Thanks guys

Nice one, thank you kindly. To be honest, I just had one of those life-and-work-coinciding moments where a personal interest smacked up nicely with my job. So I get to surf the net looking for fight videos, upcoming comps and sport history while doing research for a documentary I'm working on. Sweetness. I live in Ontario, Canada so it's the closest I can get to seeing stuff live until we start shooting. Thanks for the welcome!

How does Herring compare with Mir? I thought Lesnar/Mir in 81 was a better fight than some gave it credit for. Herring still a contender? Or is he just a better match for someone new-ish like Brock?

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll enjoy it around here, everyone does.

As for the Mir - Herring question, In my opinion I see Mir as being alot more dangerous with on the ground with submissions. The Herring fight may have gone another way in that position. Than again, I think Herrings striking is alot better than Mirs is so the standing could have also gone differently.

Who Knows, I do know that I am looking forward to the Lesnar - Herring fight. It should be interesting.

How's Herring on the ground? Brock looks to me to be someone who could both dish out and absorb a lot of punishment in a stand-up striking situation, but his size/mass might actually work against his quickness and agility on the ground. The boy does have a mean takedown though...

Herring's okay, not great, definitely no Frank Mir. He knows subs, stuff like a rear naked choke, but he isn't that great off his back. He is, however, incredibly durable. On top, he has good GnP.

Welcome, dawg.

Brock should beat him. Herring can take a shot better than Mir and on the feet he'll just keep coming at you. So like Damone said, very durable. He's a real banger. Brock should try to get him down quickly and I think he might end the fight from there. I really like Herring, but something inside me wants Brock to do well also.
