With a proposed bout between Alistair Overeem and Bobby Lashley now dead and buried, "The Reem" was left searching for an opponent. But just a few short hours ago, rumours surfaced of a potential fight with Former UFC Heavyweight Todd Duffee.

Reports were quick to surface that an agreement was possible, with both sides locked in tense negotiations earlier today, and it looks like the fight will go ahead with Duffee releasing the following message via his own Facebook:

“Have no plans on NYE? Dream Dynamite 2010: Duffee VS Overeem on HDnet!!!”

While this bout would be Duffee's first return to MMA since he lost his job in the UFC, the Heavyweight fighter still holds a respectable 6-1 record. He went 1-1 under the UFC banner, defeating Tim Hague in just 7 seconds, earning the title of the UFC's "fastest KO". Following that, he lost a fight against Mike Russow that saw the veteran take a vicious beating before delivering an epic third round knockout, causing a Major upset. Duffee was subsequently released from the UFC with Dana White blaming attitude problems for the parting of ways.

Interestingly, 2010 was a year Overeem proved his dominance to the world. From his total dismantling of Brett Rogers back in May, to then winning this years K-1 tournament. The 33-11 Strikeforce Champion is certain to compete at the New Years Eve show, even without Duffee, should a suitable opponent be found.

As well as this, K-1 have also addeda pro wrestling bout between Bob Sapp and Shinichi Suzukawa, set will be held under Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) rules.
interesting match-up

Todd will most likely get mauled. However, i congratulate him for having the cajones to take the fight at short notice, i hope he being well compensated.

Uberreem by vicious KO sometime in the 1st.

Okay so this fight is official now? I hope so, I was holding out for Duffee to do great things, but I have to say getting your ass kicked by Overeem is probably not the best way to get back to the big leagues here in the states... eh, maybe that bridge is to burt to rebuild.

You know Dana probably has a six figure contract offer all written up and will have somebody standing waiting to send it should Duffee win.

Win-Win for Duffee AFAIC. Either he beats Alistair and becomes a star; or he makes a tidy wage packet and earns respect for stepping up and taking on a monster like Overeem. The chances of him getting seriously hurt are slim, so I can see why he's decided to step in there. A win over Overeem would be huge for his career, it's not like he has his own hype train to preserve anymore. That came to a swift hault the second his head hit the canvas after being clobbered by Russow.

Duffee is more of a can than Rogers is now. I can't imagine what happens to Overeems reputation if he loses this fight in any method. Even if Duffee can l-n-p a decision it will be devastating.

Duffee has nothing to lose here. He's a confident guy, hopefully he doesn't come in this fight intimidated.

Is Duffee a tall HW? I can't remember any of his stats. I vaguely remember him being close to Carwins size.

I can see this been a bit like Overeem vs Ben Edwards in the K-1 last 16, except you have to wonder if Duffee could get back up after any one of those shots.

No Offence to Duffee I really like him as a fighter and think he is a great prospect, but I think he is mad to take on this fight, if I was him I would of been calling out Arlovski or Rogers for a SF event.

This fight is the best thing Todd duffee ever did. This is what a real fighter wants. I'm not real clear on exactly what put him out of the ufc, I'm sure it wasn't one bad fight but, a good showing in this fight win or lose, could put him right back in or make him one of the few who don't need it.

WAR TODD!

Kick Overeem's ass so we can have a hundred "exposed" "K-1 sucks" "horsemeat food poisoning" threads:thumb02:

edit:
"I think every opponent is risky. It's MMA, that's what it's about. It's a chance to fight in Japan and a chance to fight one of the best. I'm in the sport to test myself and not have some sort of padded record. I'm here to fight, that's why we do what we do. I want to see what I'm made of and Alistair is a great opponent to do that against."

Duffee has noticed the popular sentiment that taking the fight against the highly dangerous Overeem on short notice is a mistake, and he challenged that by wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed, "Doubt Me".

"I definitely wore it on purpose. I know everyone's got Alistair picked. I definitely think I deserve a little more respect than what I'm getting and I'm going to go out there and prove that. [I accepted the fight] the moment I got the offer. I didn't hear about it for some time. I heard about it maybe ten days ago."

Duffee's manager, Monte Cox, did not leap on the idea as his 25 year old charge did.

"My manager said no, but I think you just can't say no to this kind of opportunity. You've got to do things in your life to get where you want to be and who's got the right to tell you about it. That's how I feel. I actually asked my manager if he could get this fight for me. I heard that they were having trouble getting an opponent for him and everybody turned it down. I thought there might be a shot in hell that I could get it and at first he said no, we talked for about an hour and he finally went out there and did it. I have one of the best managers in the business. I understand his perspective on why I shouldn't be here but I know the reasons why I should be here."
