I thought I remember in an interview he said his mother was Dutch and his father was from Suriname. It has been years though, so I could be mistaken.

It was briefly controlled by both the English and the Dutch, but it was under Dutch control for hundreds of years.

I think the Dutch traded New Amsterdam (aka New York) for the British holdings in Suriname, but I might be incorrect or oversimplifying things.

So in a way Overeem reflects some of the relationships the two countries have had. Either way I think he mainly identifies with the Netherlands. Probably because of his citizenship!

Well they have had their royal families marry each other at times. Also the UK has come to the aid of the Netherlands quite a few times in the past. Lastly he is ethnically dutch on his mother's side!
