Miguel Torres signs with GLORY kickboxing, will make debut in June

Miguel Torres has decided to try his hand at kickboxing.

The former WEC bantamweight champion has signed a one-night contract with GLORY, according to his manager Glenn Robinson. Torres will make his promotional debut at GLORY 17 Los Angeles on June 21 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

The 33-year-old will take part in a one-night, 145-pound four-man tournament. He'll meet Shane Oblonsky in one semi-final fight, while Gabriel Varga vs. Yodkhunpon Sitmonchai is the other semi-final. Both Torres and Oblonsky will be making their pro kickboxing debuts.

Torres, who is 41-7 as a pro MMA fighter, most recently defeated Giovanni Moljo via unanimous decision in February. Prior to that win, he had lost three fights in a row, including two since his release from the UFC in Aug. 2012.

Torres' debut will air on the GLORY 17 Spike TV undercard. The main card will mark the promotion's first pay-per-view telecast.

Whatever floats his boat. Maybe it's not a career wise move and he knows it, maybe he just want's to try it. It's only a 1-fight contract.

unless he has improved dramatically, he's gonna get killed. The dudes at Glory aren't ******* around, they are lethal.

Dumb decisions like this shortens careers. Bad move by Miguel, he could've redeemed post-UFC but this is madness.

The Miguel Torres kickboxing experiment is over ... before it even began.

The former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) bantamweight champion has withdrawn from his upcoming fight against Shane Oblonsky at the GLORY 17: "Los Angeles" event on June 21 in Inglewood, Calif., according to the promotion, and has been replaced by Brazil's Marcus Vinicius.

"Baiano" is ranked No. 8 in the featherweight division, having last seen action at GLORY 8 in Japan, where he dropped a decision to No. 1-ranked Mosab Amrani. If Vinicius can win the featherweight contender tournament in Los Angeles, he'll earn a spot in the division's next world championship tournament later this year.

But that means he must first get through Oblonsky, who like fellow tournament participants Gabriel Varga and Yodkhunpon Sitmonchai, are all gunning for the same prize.

GLORY 17 airs live on Spike TV and will be followed immediately afterward by the GLORY: "Last Man Standing" pay-per-view (PPV) event, billed as "the most stacked card in kickboxing history" with three world titles on the line.

Marc De Bonte defends his welterweight title against "Bazooka" Joe Valtellini while Daniel Ghita rematches Rico Verhoeven in heavyweight action.
