Akiyama to Protest Legality of Misaki Kick

Wow, this is actually big news. Akiyama could not only get the loss wiped clean, but actually pick up a win here.

Quote:
New Year's Eve always seems to spell turmoil for Yoshihiro Akiyama (Pictures).

After making his debut at K-1 Premium 2004 Dynamite, Akiyama was forced to withdraw from a bout with Royce Gracie (Pictures) for K-1's New Year's Eve offering in 2005 when he sustained a back injury in training. The 2006 edition of Dynamite was the site of his now-infamous greasing scandal against icon Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures). Now controversy has arisen again on the heels of his loss to Kazuo Misaki (Pictures) at the Dec. 31 Yarennoka card.

Akiyama and his team have filed a protest with K-1 and HERO'S parent company Fight Entertainment Group, which co-sponsored the Yarennoka event with M-1 Global. Akiyama contends that the fight-ending kick delivered by Misaki was in fact illegal.

As he attempted to scramble to his feet after being knocked down by a Misaki left hook, Akiyama took a brutal lunging kick to the face. Following the bout, there was much heated debate among fans as to whether Akiyama's hands were still on the mat when he was struck.

According to the rules used for the Yarennoka card, if Akiyama's hands were still on the deck, Misaki's kick would've been illegal. Furthermore, if the strike were illegal, Akiyama's inability to continue would make him the victor by disqualification.

FEG President Sadaharu Tanigawa told the media that while he wasn't sure of the kick's illegality, he planned to review the fight tape and then make a ruling on the matter.

EDIT: Pictures- The kick looks illegal to me!

Pretty crazy. Looks illegal to me. I don't know if he should get the win but at least the loss be taken away with a schedualed rematch.

I have watched this video repeatedly and I can say with 100% certainty that this kick was legal. He was on his feet and standing back up at the time when he was kicked.

Uhhhh...What you're saying matches the pictures above except you are leaving out where his hands are. According to the rules, if his hands are on the mat, the kick is illegal.

However, on a personal note, I don't think that split second of his hands being on the mat or off it should matter. Nothing would have been different if his kick had landed a split second later. The guy is trying to win on a technicality.

I thought it was borderline illegal when I saw it first in real time, the picture confirms this. However I believe this is one of those things where the referee's initial decision should stand. Whatever call was made at the time (wrong or right) should stand.

I think in a situation where a fighter has his weight on the soles of his feet, it shouldn't count as downed.

Wow. When watching the fight live(ah, good times) I definetely thought that kick was illegal, but it was very borderline. IMO, I agree with Davisty, in the position Akiyama was in, it really wouldn't have made a difference. But rules are rules.

This is doing nothing to help Akiyama's reputation.

It will be interesting to see what happens, and a rematch is for certain. This time, personally, I'd like to see Akiyama roll Misaki's ass.

I also thought the kick was illegal from the outset and the pictures confirmed it for me. I would rather see a rematch then have Akiyama get the win on a technicality.

As far as Akiyama's rep goes, he got a bad rap from the outset. The whole cheating scandal was way overblown as he did it right in from of an official.

If the rematch happens, I hope Akiyama pounds Misaki...I've always hated Kazuo. He's so inconsistent and then after that fight he acted like he was the greatest ever and that speech he gave to Akiyama was downright classless. Especially after he got dropped earlier in the fight.

When I saw that kick I didn't even question it, I thought soccer kicks were allowed...

But this is what makes the rules stupid, Akiyama was less than a split second from having his hand off the floor (right hand only has finger tips while left has knuckles), therefore it makes it stupid that Misaki's kick was illegal and will probably cost him the match because he was 1/8th of a second too fast.

But judging from the Japanese's attitude towards Yoshi, I doubt theyll give it to him.

PS: Good times indeed BP
