From what I know, there are four world grand prix qualifying events: Europe, Asia, Japan, USA (each of which have 'feeder' preliminary events, held in cities like Amsterdam). The Japan GP might be the exception.
Four additional fighters who have performed well in GP events that year are chosen.
Then, the final eight men in the previous year's WGP Final are chosen to round out the final sixteen (called Final Elimination in (insert city name here)). The fighters only fight once that night, which leaves eight for the WGP Final.
K-1 Max is the middleweights (155 pound limit). Buakaw, Masato, Kraus, etc. They also have WGP events like the heavyweights.

Thanks very much, repped.
Really appreciate it, i'll try and follow it as best I can now.
Looking at the list of events, there is one called..
K-1 Italy Oktagon 2008
Is that just an event with normal fights, or would it be qualifications to something?
Or is it like a feeder event that you were talking about?

It's still pretty much the same.
So its like this.
First you have to fight within your country and win. Once you won your country, say France for EX. you get entered into the Continental GP with all the other European or Asian countries. If you won that, then you get slotted into the Quarter finals, or the Round of 16.
So now your have the winners from:
Asia GP
USA GP
Europe GP
Inter GP
Japan GP
USA 2 GP
Plus 2 cans selected by K-1, and the 8 finalists from last year.
These dudes battle it out in Osaka, and the 8 remaining finalists get to go to Tokyo for the annual K-1 World GP.
