Yoshihiro Akiyama: The Best Man In A GI

Name: Yoshihiro Akiyama
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 192 lbs
Style: Judo
Record: 9-1-0
Fighting Out Of: Osaka, Japan

Yoshihiro is a force in K1 right now. He's not a big name in the MMA world, but he's definitely a force. He has 4 TKO's and 5 Submission, with great skills on the ground both striking and in submissions. His recent streak of 8-0 since his lost to Jerome Lebanner in March of 2005 has gotten my attention, but what is really significant is his ability to finish.

Since being KO'd by Lebanner over a year ago Yoshihiro has yet to have a fight go to a decision and he has finished 6 of his 8 wins in the first round. He has finished noteworthy Russian submission artist Kestutis Smirnovas and the incredibly strong Dutch kickboxer Melvin Manhoef each in round 1. These are his last two victories.

Yoshihiro stopped Manhoef's 9 win streak with a 2 minutes armbar.

Yoshihiro alsoo stopped Smirnovas, who was coming off a tough loss to Kazushi Sakuraba. Not only did Yoshihiro beat Sakuraba's time of submission, he more than cut it in half, doing what took the Gracie Hunter almost seven minutes in a little under three.

For those of you who watch K1, keep watching this guy, because he will be a force.

Wow... Just took a gander at a highlight of his right here. Isn't this the guy that Saku wants to fight in this years Dynamite event?

I don't wanna confuse "heart of a warrior" with "thoughts of suicide," because I'm a big fan of Saku. But if this is the guy he's thinking about taking on, he's looking a serious beatdown in the face.

Akiyama is the best man at 185, especially when you consider that his only loss is to Jerome Lebanner, who weighs in around 270 pounds and is about to take his shot for the K1 title at Semmy Schilt.

I just don't see anyone that size being able to deal with what seems like a perfect blend of takedowns, pounds, striking and submissions. Yoshihiro's judo is out of this world and all of the other parts of his game are constantly improving.

Best of luck to Saku, but this guy is a force, and I don't see anyone in that weight class being able to stop Yoshihiro.

My only wish for this guy is that he comes over to UFC or Pride so I can match him up against some guys I know more about.
