Arizona bill could criminalize Internet trolling

Arizona marches to the beat of its own drummer. But if that drummer gets upset and starts hollering on the Internet, he might get tossed in the clink.
After spending years targeting illegal aliens, the Grand Canyon State is turning its sights on obnoxious Internet users (commonly called 'trolls'). A new update to the state's telecommunications harassment bill could make the practice of harassing people online illegal.
Arizona House Bill 2549 has already passed both of the state's legislative bodies and is currently sitting on the desk of Governor Jan Brewer. While there's a lot in there that doesn't concern trolling, here's the line that has people worried:
It is unlawful for any person, with intent to terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend, to use ANY ELECTRONIC OR DIGITAL DEVICE and use any obscene, lewd or profane language or suggest any lewd or lascivious act, or threaten to inflict physical harm to the person or property of any person.
Violators could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor and face up to 6 months in jail. If electronic devices are used to stalk someone, the charges then become a Class 3 felony, with penalties ranging from a minimum sentence of two and a half years in jail for non-dangerous offenders with no prior record to 25 years.

Between things like this and the ridiculous anti-bullying campaigns soaring through America, I have little faith in the mental strength and stability for future Americans generations.

I get that bullying is bad and something needs to be done about it, but this sort of shit is not the answer. People get on board with a cause and it starts to build momentum and before you know it, something ridiculous like this happens because of the outrage of large groups. The problem is that they see something like this as a solution without putting any real thought into the ramifications and implications that are presented with a freedom killing bill like this. When you start voluntarily giving away some of your freedom, it gives the government the reassurance that they can take more and the people wont mind.

You are correct, although I disagree that something needs to be done about bullying. Bullying has been around since the very first time a group of kids played together thousands of years ago - it's a part of their natural social behavior and growth, there's a reason it has been present throughout human history.

That's a topic for another time, though. This bill is retarded.

I understand its purpose in life as well, but modern humanity is above all other forms of natural selection these days, why not be above that one as well?

Because it leads to bills like this, and you can't change natural behavior. Kids are going to bully other kids, it doesn't matter what you do, it's part of their natural and social behavior as animals, and no good ever comes from trying to dwarf and drown any animal's natural and social behavior.

You tell a kid to stop jumping on the bed, turn around walk out the room, he jumps on the bed. They are kids, they are going to bully, it's part of who they are at this age and it is part of their social growth. What needs to changes is parents babying them and treating them like little angels, and teaching them to stand up for themselves instead of running to the school crying.

Parents are at fault for not raising their kids strong enough to stand up for themselves and deal with it, not the kids who are naturally, instinctively, and socially growing via an act of bullying that has taken place naturally for thousands of years. It's the new wave of American "pussificaton" causing this issue, not kids doing what kids do.

And here I thought there were ignore buttons all over the internet...

Ridiculous. I've been bullied (with words, not violence) so I'm thinking that's basically what cyber bullying is. If you hurt yourself or even kill yourself because of that (as I've seen on TV) then screw you, be happy in your afterlife.

I know it sounds harsh but if you're too weak to take verbal abuse then you're not fit for this world anyway and your parents didn't do a good enough job. But instead of blaming the parents I've got another idea. Let's blame that other 14 year old who probably thinks its all in good fun and he doesn't hurt anyone. The only one who can do anything against a bully is you. No parents, no friends, no police and certainly no government.
