evolution works like this.. just say we start out with a white bears i nthe north pole and black bears in the north pole. as we know it snows in the NP. so when other animals go out to hunt the bears, the black bears are the more visible bears and therefore the animals will go after the prey they see best and first. by killing off the black bears it decreases their chances of reproducing. meanwhile the white bears arent getting killed off and then are reproducing. this continues unitl this specific trait dominates that species (ie all bears in the NP have white fur)

Its like humans. at one point some human ancestors didnt walk upright and some did. the ones that couldnt were slower than the ones that did and therefore couldnt get away from predators. which means the upright humans were surviving and reproducing at a greater rate than the ones who werent until eventually all humans had the ability to walk upright

much better than i could have said it... and this works because the earth itself is moving... things aren't constant. animals migrate to places they'll never get back from over long periods of time. so various bears travel to new places, and eventually get weeded out like previously said. then, the evolution of that individual genetic line starts to adapt to its enviornment...

Awesome, that makes sense. But do we know for a fact that black bears and white bears all lived in the NP at one time?

What I'm saying is they didn't start out as white bears, they evolved from a lower species with probably a different color scheme over millions of years to eventually become a large white bear. How did it become white?

who even says they started out in the NP? their derivitive species might have migrated there...

My point exactly. When they migrated there, how did they become white? Are you telling me that every species we know of today and every variation of that species had like 20 other counterparts with slightly different color schemes and only one survived? Because that would be a lot of animals at one time, the earth would have been jampacked.

They didn't start out as "white bears"....so how did they become white? Just because the snow is white they somehow became white to blend in and elude predators...which BTW polar bears have none....LOL HOW DID THEY BECOME WHITE!

lol, I guess it's a hard question...I can understand everything else, I just wanna know how they became the way they are in the first place. Same with chameleons, surely they weren't ALWAYS able to change colors....how did they first become able to change colors? How did the first "polar bear" become white?

i can argue evolution, but for that, you really need an expert!

haha nice.

they became white through evolution! lol. not a good explanation. but ill try and see if i can explain it. ill use rabbits

all rabbits obviously share a common ancestor somewhere down the road. as the rabbits migrated elsewhere they needed to adapt to their environment. so as certain rabbits first got to say a snowy area, the rabbits with the LIGHTEST fur would survive while the rabbits with the darkest fur would not. therefore the rabbits with the lighter fur would reproduce. over time as the lighter furred rabbits kept reproducing, their offspring would have lighter fur than their parents. and as they would get hunted, again the lighter skinned rabbits would survive to reproduce while the darker ones would not. this would continue until the lighter furred ones would keep reproducing and reproducing to eventually get white fur.

so they didnt necessarily start out white, but certainly there was some variation is the rabbits fur which enabled a rabbit with a certain gene to survive and they eventually evolved into white fur
