all rabbits obviously share a common ancestor somewhere down the road. as the rabbits migrated elsewhere they needed to adapt to their environment. so as certain rabbits first got to say a snowy area, the rabbits with the LIGHTEST fur would survive while the rabbits with the darkest fur would not. therefore the rabbits with the lighter fur would reproduce. over time as the lighter furred rabbits kept reproducing, their offspring would have lighter fur than their parents. and as they would get hunted, again the lighter skinned rabbits would survive to reproduce while the darker ones would not. this would continue until the lighter furred ones would keep reproducing and reproducing to eventually get white fur.

so they didnt necessarily start out white, but certainly there was some variation is the rabbits fur which enabled a rabbit with a certain gene to survive and they eventually evolved into white fur
so close, lol...so who/what causes the next generation of rabbits to have lighter colored fur. I understand that the rabbit is adapting to its surroundings, but how is it happening? I'm pretty sure I'm asking to much with this, probably why evolution is still considered a "theory". This is probably the one question that still can't be answered without mentioning God. Who/what causes the rabbits fur to get lighter? And I still think the chameleon and octopus are good examples too. How did they evolve to be able to change color?

i think what LUV is asking is the pysical mechinism that causes a rabbit's fur to "make the decision that white is best" and then change. adaptation isn't the question, it's the method of "consciousness" in evolution to be aware of the enviornment and change according to it. in essense, how does evolution act like a squid who can change it's color to suit its enviornment, and then, how did that even happen?

whiskey, racism, money, grease, twinkie's, guns.....yep lol thats about it

you guys arent understanding. the rabbit doesnt decide to change its fur color. the rabbits who are best suited for the environment reproduce more often and pass their genes down more than a rabbit who is less suited.

Evolution is an extraordinarily slow process.

so when we talk about how humans lost their body hair. humans evolved out of africa where as we know it is incredibly hot. humans who had tons of body hair were more likely to die of heat exhaustion than those who had less. so it was a benefit to have less right? the humans at the time didnt say to themselves "hey we should all have less body hair" rather the oens with less body hair continued to reproduce with each other. and they would pass down these genes (that made them have less body hair) to their offspring and so on. until eventually the body hair was gone. but they didnt plan it out to make it so we had less body hair its just how evolution worked out.

i agree and all, but how about this...

there wreen't a whole number of "humans" let's say, and a few of them happened to have less hair, and they happened to procreate and succeed better than the hairy ones. all "humans" had to have been the same at one point, not a few with noticibly less hair. so the question is, how did evolution, or nature, know to cause less hair to grow?

that's what LUV is asking... i think...

lol, i know thats what hes asking and thats what ive been answering with. EVERY characteristic we have, we haev because of genes. and everyone has different genes. the humans with the genes that enable to greatest chance of survival reproduce more often and therefore that gene is passed down.

your genes arent random, they come from your parents

i know... i guess some people just want a defined mechinism beyond "this is how it happens".

That actually does sort of answer the question I'm asking but I also don't understand how there could be 10 or more variations of every species where only the 1 variation that had the best traits survived. So how did some humans have less hair than others to begin with? And this makes sense and all but I don't know if it explains *everything* evolution effects. Like I still wanna know how an octopus evolved to allow itself to be able to change colors. Or how did the octopus evolve to have an ink pouch to shoot at enemies? How did the skunk evolve to have a little stink pouch to spray at enemies? How did reptiles evolve to grow wings and be able to fly and become birds? And don't tell me there were a million variations of octopi and skunk and reptiles and whatnot and only the best survived lol. That can't be right. At one time an octopus didn't have an ink pouch, now it does...where did it come from?

Interesting topic though....

your question boils down to...

how did a lizard turn into a bird?

did he keep stretching up for food until he started to jump and eventually learned to...?

interesting question!
