Karate in MMA

As a Karate practitioner myself I often wonder why is Karate as an art is overlooked in MMA world? Joe Rogan always find it funny that Machida made it big being a Karate fighter, he keeps comparing him to streetfighter's video game characters.

I see YouTube videos of fights b/w styles involving Karate against other form of fighting styles and I never once saw Karate guy doing bad or losing. Be it against Kickboxing or Teakwondo.

So, I am just confused as to why to this is considered as a joke when is comes to direct no holds bar fighting?

Cobra Kai never dies!

That is all.

Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida, GSP... I wouldn't say it's overlooked.

If yall don't think Karate or Kung Fu don't work check this video out. It's pretty feckin' ridiculous, but it shows the power of the ancient martial arts even when used by an Anglo Saxon.

I agree. I'm a karate practitioner too and our school also runs a MMA class which I just started taking. Sparring the other night I threw a turning kick and missed. My partner rushed in ready to throw some punches so I threw up an axe kick. He nearly slipped over he stopped so fast then just looked at me in disbelief.

Listen guys I am not a Karate fanboy. I love MMA which is why I am asking this, so I would appreciate more of a logical response than posting some movie name.

Andy Hug was one of the most famous Kyokushin practitioners.

Lechi Kurbanov is also one of the best today.

I AM BACKING IT UP with evidence, if you can back it up with logic, do care to post.:-

I already know that, which is why I mentioned Lyoto Machida didn't I?

GSP had to learn wrestling and boxing from the start and he is considered as a wrestler in the MMA world. Even though Chuck Liddell did Kenpo, he is widely credited as a Kickboxer.

ONLY and ONLY Machida uses Karate to its extent and considered a Karate fighter. Hell, even Bas Rutten did Karate.

You aked a question, I answered it. Fred Ettish is the reason that karate is considered a joke in mma. Learn some history.

This guy was not considered a joke when he entered the octagon.

Traditional karate teaches little or no take down defense or grappling techniques. Without those you don't get a chance to strike much.

Machida has had success because he has learned those things and because he has extraordinary skill and talent far beyond a typical karate black belt..

Because Karate is considered to be too scripted to use in MMA, at least that's what I was always told. I used to take it as a kid but stopped after so long. No disrespect to the style.

Off the top of my head (and googling to get the spelling right :D )

Gunnar Nelson is a Goju-ryu black belt.

Bas Rutten, 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate.

Chuck Liddell is a Koei-Kan black nelt and nation champ in the sport.

Seth Petruzelli is a Shito-Ryu Karate 3rd degree black belt.

Frank Mir is a BB in Kempo Karate

Vitor Belfort trained under a student of Yoshizo Machida (can't remember the name) in Shotokan before his fight and victory over Rich Franklin.

Bigfoot Silva holds a black belt in Shotokan Karate.
