Good point, you beat me to it. BUT, it would be different here because we still have guns and to outlaw them overnight would cause tyranny and opression and our black market WOULD get big because just because they are illegal doesn't mean they are all just gonna vaporize and disappear. All the guns we have in this country will still be in this country, unlike the other countries with strict gun laws, we have had guns in our lives for too long now.

yea i know we wouldnt be able to get guns off the streets over night. but police could begin to confiscate weapons from criminals during other arrests and not allow them to get them back. or some cities have done programs where the city buys back weapons with gift cards. i just think something needs to be done. im not talking about a radical reform or martial law

strict gun laws that still allow people to own guns. i'm not for letting any jerk get a gun, but with careful regulation and documentation... **** yeah people have a right to own guns. strict fine, outlaw no!

the thing i don't get, is why conservatives are against strict gun laws. nobody's talking outlawing hunting or shooting sports, but wouldn't people pro-gun want to do everything possible to ensure the continuance and least problems with guns? i mean, people who wants guns can get guns if they're qualified, just make it harder for assholes to get them. if you're going to buy a gun, you'll buy a gun, but it would be at least that much more difficult for impulse buys like the ones leading to the VT massace!

whiskey, racism, money, grease, twinkie's, guns.....yep lol thats about it

that's why some states have a waiting period.

however it's always going to be easy to get one illegally and fast if somebody really wants one. it's analogous to even if you have a good home security system, if someone really wants to break in, they will, just might take a little longer

Did someone on here say VA was a particularly easy state in which to buy firearms?

thats what im saying. as i said i personally am for outlawing them but im also a realist. i think there needs to be a compromise. not just waiting periods, but tougher background checks (i.e. if anyone has had multiple stalking complaints=no guns), or even administering polygraph tests, or make someone go to a shrink and take a MMPI test.

your point about the conservatives is right on the head. they always claim that they want guns they just dont want them in the wrong hands. if they are so sure that they are responsible enough to own a gun they shouldnt care about proving it but taking tests, personality disorder tests and etc. sure it may take an extra few weeks but u would just have to plan it

I think when something happens everyone rushes things way too much, and they are so willing to give up their liberties. Yes what happened was tragic, but I think Its ridiculous to even consider banning guns. If you have a mental illness which this guy had and he was an alien resident those in itself should prvent you from buying a firearm. Even so he could of got a gun anyway.

Now to the non- American who don't know what its like to like in a constitutional republic. We were given certain liberties for a reason. Our Founding Fathers wanted us to be able to protect ourselves from the King of England coming over here a taking over. I dont want to live in a communist society were the government tells you what to say and what to do.
I am an American, and if you live in America and are so willing to give up your rights then I have to say you are not a true American.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms.

this is going to sound flagrantly "liberal" to me, and especially since i smoke a lot of grass, it might sound odd, but i think that people need a "file". a national data base that lists any and all crimes. this might sound horribly intrusive, but it isn't. whats wrong with having a place to see if that normal looking guy is a serial stalker?

our biggest threat is our lack of information and forsight. if people don't know, they don't know. but this kid, who was diagnosed as mentally ill, and had multiple staking complaints, walks into a gun and gets it?

come on...

we do have files of a sort on nearly everybody. that's what employers who want to do background checks use. the university dropped the ball in not keeping a closer eye on this guy. it would have been a simple matter of talking to the campus cops and his dorm director and RA.

I'm quite sure there is record of me somewhere due to my two villainous parking tickets in the past four years. or a naughty mark on my record for implying to my local YMCA branch director that he's a hypocrite for blocking Sirius Octane 20 for f-bombs, but allowing us to listen to buzzsaw where apparently the f-bombs are OK.

What's really sad is the guy had boundless rage which he apparently attempted to channel through his writing. i'm sure all of us saw bits and pieces of it on TV. It was pretentious, inarticulate crap. (I realize english may have been his 2nd language but he still couldn't write for sh!t). I am not suggesting this would have been any less tragic if he was a good writer. this is just something I noticed.

Nothing wrong with being liberal on issues. It's the knee jerk libs who scare me.
