my daughter has her 1st competition may 20. she is 8 and a tkd yellow stripe. we need to practice at home but it's hard to train your own kid. my teacher suggested pad work. should she be working combinations on the pads, or basic drills, or what? is there anything else that might hold her attention long enough to retain something? BTW she is testing for rank in about a week. she has to know some self-defense, the first tae guek form, 1 board break, sparring etc. (she is a "runner" as in "run in circles around the mat")

tell her to get wrist control, it is very important she gets wrist control. After she gets wrist control she needs to pull out her gun, pulling out her gun is the most important step.

LOL.HAHA.Repped.

Anyways, i suggest you practice what you learned in class. And im assuming she will be point sparring? Telling her to look for gaps to punch and kick threw. When its point sparring all you have to do to in is get shots that look nice.

LMAO^

It's hard to tell because every instructor looks for different things when testing. I remember my instructor would count big points for "snap", for power, and during sparring keeping your hands up.

Does she have to learn and study Korean terms? I remember we had to learn all kinds of Korean crap.

Being 8 years old and only going for her yellow stripe I wouldn't be too worried. Chances are she will pass no matter what, but if you want her to get good, tell her to practice her breathing techniques while she's doing her form. I don't know about your school, but in my school I think the white belt form was called "Chun Jee" or something like that?

Whatever it is, tell her to practice the right breathing pattern when you punch and block and all that, she has to exhale at the penetration point of the block/strike, and it makes like a "snap" effect. To my knowledge that is really good in the eyes of TKD instructors.

Other than that I really don't know. Like I said with her age and rank there's not much you can do without making her get sick of it. If she has to learn too much she might lose interest. I did for a long time cuz I wanted to hang out with my friends, I did it for 9 years, during my teenage years no less, there were months that I just hated TKD, and I never put any effort into anything. Typical teenage attitude. But it cost me big time. In 9 years I could have been a 3rd degree black belt, but I just barely got my black belt a few months before the dojo closed down. If I hadn't lost interest I coulda been really good.

she already has her stripe, she is going for full rank. she actually expressed interest when she was 7 but I wanted to make sure she would stick with it, so we did pad work at home and at the local Y etc. for about 6 months.

the only form she had to know for stripe was 8-directional. she has to know kilcho ilbu (sp?) but no korean. it's totally true what you say about "snap" and clean moves. her teacher was talking to her about that on thur., also about keeping her hands up and not curling up while sparring. She throws a nice right roundhouse though, just like mommy

she will probably get green belt before me the way things are going, my cast might come off on tue. but it'll be awhile before i'm doing much besides poomsae and punching drills. i think i'll bring a note from the orthopedic surgeon that says "no jumping jacks, squat thrusts or mountain climbers for 6 months" lol. My point is, she is more focused on rank than I am. I put it off , even when I'm not hurt, because we have to do a creative form every time we test. I hate creative forms so very, very much.

Wow I never had to do creative forms, sounds kinda fun. What is that you make up your own?

Well good luck to her and you with your ankle. She sounds truly interested I hope she does well.

we have to make up the form, name it, write it down, and then every time we test we have to expand on it, ie incorporate new stuff we've learned. however I never found out the last part until recently and I don't have a copy of my 1st creative form. that test didn't get taped so i'm just going to use what I remember from it and put in new stuff here and there. When you're doing creative forms in your living room, it's kind of fun. When you have to remember it perfectly in front of a bunch of people it sucks severely. not to mention I have to know the dreaded hwa-rang for green belt wtf ?? that's a black belt form.

If I didn't think I'd get in trouble for it I'd name my new form "creative forms suck"

Hwa-Rang?? I know of two forms that sound like that.

One is pronounced Hwa Rang, and the other is spelled similar but pronounced "Her on". I think "Her on" is the red belt/black stripe form if I remember correctly. And the Hwa Rang is the green belt form.

It's been forever and this is all coming to me as I type, I never thought I would remember the names of these forms, but I think I remember the beginning stance for "Her on" was you stuck your arms out above your eyes and made like a triangle shape with them?

this form starts with a left palm strike and then a double punch. I can't remember what comes after that. It doesn't have the symmetry of the tae guek forms. i got a diagram of it online, and will start going over it soon even though it'll probably be a couple months before I test for green belt.

forms are OK when you're doing them in class. however, I think they're overrepresented in testing. especially when you begin one-steps, there are so f***ing many of them there's plenty of rote memorization there without throwing in forms. i have to have 3 forms, sam jang, hwa-rang, and the aforementioned creative form. also all of earth, a 3-part exercise which is all stances.

I got into trouble for no good reason after my orange belt test. my teacher decided to have me spar another orange belt who had even less control than me, which was saying a lot at the time.. also she was about 4 in. taller and 40 lb. heavier than me. we were point sparring and she was totally drilling me over & over, as in force inappropriate to point sparring. I went to jam her (without having been properly shown how to do it) and went in with my shoulder and knocked her flat. So I had a yellow stripe on my belt, altho I did go up in rank. I think my teacher realizes that was an experiment that failed. all she did was fall on her ass as far as I could see. Since then, before I got hurt, I have been sparring once a week, can't wait to get back to fight night.

My point is I could not be more thrilled that I will be testing out of the cycle.
