Independence Movements in Europe

In September Scotland will host a referendum on leaving or staying with the United Kingdom, a movement which if successful could resonate all over Europe.

Since 1990 Europe has added 15 countries to it's list after regions were partitioned and split up:

Quote:
1990
Lithuania

1991
Russia
Croatia
Slovenia
Belarus
Moldova
Latvia
Macedonia
Ukraine

1992
Bosnia and Herzegovina

1993
Czech Rep
Slovakia

2006
Montenegro
Serbia

2008
Kosovo
There is a huge independence movement in Catalunya brewing which will have it's eyes firmly fixed on Scotland's decision. There are also strong cases for Bavaria (Germany), Basque County (Spain), Sardinia (Italy), Flanders (Belgium), Frisia (Netherlands) and a host of others.

Do you think further regionalism is good or bad?

I think it's great. Smaller countries always have higher economic development indexes per capita, less corruption, less politics and most of all less govt. waste. The idea of pan-region "nation states" is just a way to thrust a larger, more useless big govt. on a larger conglomerated area with resources being plundered to develop capitals and a handful of metros to impoverish the rest of the area. Especially those that are culturally not part of the majority.

Just take a look at the Scandinavian countries, Baltic countries etc... All are doing great economically compared to when they were part of larger empires.

Larger govts only exist to enrich a few at the expense of larger masses. Their only justification is for defence etc. but even that is flimsy as it can always be accomplished by military alliances like NATO or the Ancient Greek States alliance against Persia.

Even the United States colonies were more free and enterprising when they were the united STATES of America rather than this corporate fascist empire called the USA we have now.

It's a great point, how'd you feel about: Confederates States, republic of Texas, Independent Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, New England Republic etc etc

I'd say they'd be better off as long as they parted on good terms and maintained some degree of economic cooperation a-la the original colonies. Puerto Rico and Hawaii especially, they're really no more than modern imperial conquests, their culture, people etc. are entirely different to the mainland US.

The world needs to get closer as one yes, but as people, not as govts and empires. I doubt Hitler, Genghis Khan etc. had worldly brotherhood in mind when trying to unite the world as an empire. They just wanted a larger area to plunder at will for them and their buddies. Modern govts put a lot of spin on it but at its core big govt is still the same, it only benefits politicians and their corporate puppeteers, just like it did the monarchs and courtiers of the past.

Well stated.
