Angry High school writing vs. College writing

This is really pissing me off now that I'm in college. In high school I had 3 different English teachers over 4 years; 2 of them taught completely different styles of writing (neither of which I ever fully grasped), and the remaining one was my senior year English teacher who was such a joke we never did any writing at all.

Now I'm in a college level writing class (GEW - General Ed. Writing), and once again I am introduced to a COMPLETELY new type of writing. This time it's analytical writing, the basis of most college papers according to our professor. Wait, but I've never written this way before, so what the hell has high school been preparing me for? Apparently, my first 12 years of writing education have been of no use to college level papers. As proof of this, 100% of the class did the first paper wrong, we received our papers back with ink all over them, marking us down for "excessive summary".

So here I am, at 2am trying to figure out how the f*** I'm supposed to write my next paper. I'm supposed to analyze George Orwell's essay on his childhood in a boarding school, "Such, Such Were the Joys". I've basically written enough in outlines and omitted bullshit to fill up 5+ pages. But I still can't get the hang of this analysis business. It's really hard for me to pull out meaning from someone's text and analyze it, because I always get the nagging suspicion that the person who wrote the text is way smarter than me and his points are probably going over my head. This is not a good mind set for analysis! God damn high school, you really f***in let me down on this one.

Bro, I'm in my second college English class and it sucks. Causal Analysis papers are worse on top of MLA formatting a teacher that nitpicks each and every mark you make. I have a 6 page rough draft due, then 2 days before it was due, I was told to redo the topic and make another. Had that day and the day after to come up with a new topic and redo the whole damn thing.

Good thing is though, that my first rough draft is more geared for my argumentive essay so I get some time off when that rolls around.

I hate MLA!!!. This is the description of the paper I had to write.

Quote:
Objective: To practice writing a classical argument using Toulmin structures

Purpose: For this assignment, you will apply what you have learned about the structure of Toulmin argument to write a complete argumentative essay.

Description: To complete this assignment, write an argument using the Toulmin strategies and structures described in your textbook. First, read your source material and develop a claim. Second, develop an essay that contains sufficient data to back up your claim. The body of your essay should also make clear to your readers what your warrant is. If the warrant seems unclear to your readers, you should also explain any justification of your warrant. Third, include at least one counterargument and a rebuttal for that counterargument.

Use five sources from Chs. 12 – 18 of your textbook (either of your choice or as specified by your instructor) for this assignment.

Your essay should be 1500 words in length, not including the list of works cited. Please use MLA format (see Ch. 18 of your handbook) for in-text citations and your list of works cited.
And we just turn our paper's online and our teacher doesn't grade the papers other teachers grade the papers. And they each seem to have a different understanding of what we are supposed to do. So you could turn one paper in and have 4 different people grade it an get 4 different grades. It sucks.

MLA blows. I loved my last English class because we could choose our own topic in a certain genre, but now, we have assigned topics which pisses me off.

Well because your in College, I may be saying the wrong things here, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

How does the rest of the class feel about that paper they got wrong? Maybe ask them about what they did wrong and if they have the same situation and maybe you could come

When I was in Highschool, writing was my strongest assest, still is to this day, I just don't go to College though.

Do you know any of your old Highschool teachers that taught you Language arts? I would maybe get in touch with them and ask for advice, I did that once with my old L.A teacher and it made a difference.

Maybe I can even help you, maybe show me a paragraph and give me an example of what you have to do. I did a few papers for my ex-girlfriend in her first year of college and she got a 90% on one and a 95% on the other.

Also, if you get that nagging suspicion, just think it over for a lil while and make your best judgement and don't overthink whether or not it's what the author was going for. Not every writer can detect anothers metaphors down to a tee you know, if we all could, all our papers would look the same.

Also, this might sound dumb to you because theres money involved with your education, but don't get frusterated, that never helps, try and take your time and focus.

I hope I was of some help.

Do any of ya'll have to use the Toulmin model? Thats what we are really working on right now and it sucks. You have to pretty much argue for something and then turn around and offer a counter-argument to your agrument. Then you have to have a rebuttal to your counter-argument.

See, that shit sounds complicated to me now.

I don't study writing on a collegiate level so I feel in way over my head but I still would like to lend a hand to The Surfman.

Trust me it is. The paper that I had to write using that style was over the US version and other cultural's version of Cinderella.

I agree MLA is complete and utter BS. The good folks of the MLA can decide to change writing formats whenever the hell they please and we just have to follow them.

Surf, the best bet is to have someone from the language success center at your school to see your work before you turn it in. I had to ask my counselor where I went to have my English papers looked at.
