Yeah, I know. But some people sometimes seem to think "They were more stupid back then because they believed this and that", but really what these anciant civilizations did was amazing considering what technology level they were at!

And don't talk about the Library in Alexandria, that's just downright sad!

You've just listened to Joe Rogan about this right? But in all seriousness: The christians weren't any "Smarter" just becuase they didn't have a strange explanation for the sun (I don't even think they HAD any good explanation for what the sun was, just that god created it somehow). What is amazing is, of course, how the freak they built the pyramids (as well as the sphinx and other impressive palaces and monuments). It's like it's doable, but the administrative and organizing WORK gotta be tremendous. But many people say it was the pyramids that put Egypt in economical collapse.

Well, we KNOW more now, but what speaks for us having higher levels of intelligence and creativity than say the ancient greeks? Of course, If I have stimulated my intellect my entire life I will develop to be smarter than someone in the middle ages wha has been dirt farming all his life, but genetically we might still be on the same level.

Also one could say that our principles and society is more intelligently structured now than say, the dark ages, which could be expressed as "We are smarter than them". But I guess it is a question of definition

I was thinking more along the lines of the trend in IQ scores and how over time they steadily increase. But then I don't know if this applies to the human race or moreover, it's specific to an individual culture. As a whole I'd feel comfortable stating the human race now is on average more intelligent in the sense of creativity and thinking capacity than in the greek era, but this isn't to say there were no brilliant people. As an example, while 400 years ago Newton is still likely the most intelligent person to live.

So I've basically said nothing but then conversations on intelligence are not that interesting to begin with,

hmm interesting. I was not aware of that the world's mean IQ is increasing. I'll have to check this up, thanks for that info.

But you're right also: Men like Newton and Gauss and Euler (I'm a math geek so I know my mathematicians lol) would be great no matter their time.

It is impressive technology for the time. Our prof showed us this back in Anth 101 a few years ago and I thought it was pretty cool.

Ehhh... kind of, kind of not. IQ is a derivative of the current pool of human intelligence, they way it works is that they do a sample test with a large group of people and set the average score as 100. Then you test against that, and if you do better or worse you receive an appropriately higher or lower score. They update this average frequently, so that 100 is always the average you are testing against.

However, what they noticed is that people are getting smarter- so someone earning a 100 now is actually doing harder work than someone who earned a 100 twenty years ago.

GMW is correct that we are getting smarter though, I was just clarifying that the numbers aren't actually going up, due to the fact that IQ testing is essentially graded on a curve.

*Gets an erection*

They'd be godlike mathematicians always, you're definitely right.

Technically, they probably make it up because they didn't know really what happened but even we can't explain how the universe was created. Obviously we have theories but yet to be proved right.

well, look at all modern religion in the same light. Most of it is just as ridiculous as that if not more. Add ot that that 90% of religion is founded on the same belife (ancient paganism) and it gets even mroe retarted. GO read a D&D novel, and the bible, then it gets way worse (D&D = the bible, yet people are liek "OMFG D&D IS FOR NERD QUEERS LOLOLOL"). Religion is one of my favorite subjects in history lol

Joppp....did Rogan mention that in an act? I know he and I both share a fascination with Egyptians. But I wasn't aware he mentioned anything about them in any comedy.

And yeah...I agree that religious explanations for the creation of the universe are pretty much just an easy way out. But creative to say the least.
