Most private schools are actually worse then public schools, at least drug wise, because of all the rich kids that go there.

At my public high school the biggest drug problem was weed but at the private schools around us and the next town over, which is really rich, they have a lot of problems with coke and other more hardcore drugs.

I went to both a inner city public school and a private boarding school in the states. In the public school your biggest concern was making it home in one piece. There were fights every day and more pronounced incidents of violence as well. Once I got to boarding school, there were not fights and what could be called a 24 hour buffet drug culture. There were so many kids with money that you could get anything you wanted. I partied harder in my three years at boarding school than I did in college. The biggest concern you had at boarding school was where to hide your stash so the administrators wouldn't find it.

But MalkyBoy makes a great point. While boarding school/private school provides a safe learning environment, almost everybody there comes from the same strata and the schools do not provide kids with any of the social tools they will need to navigate life with different people from different backgrounds and different world views. It's pretty sad that kids can't go to school without being worried about their safety.

Glad to hear the kid didn't die.

Some kid got stabbed to death in Lincolnshire at school a few years ago. I kinda knew his cousin a bit, but I've heard the kid was a prick. My mate used to work with his mum and when she found out he was joining the po po she said "My Luke wanted to join the police" and he said "oh yeah, what does he want to do now?" :S

Oooh faux pas, the kid has been transferred to Glasgow so it must have been serious because there are decent general hospitals in Ayrshire but it looks like he will pull through

I didn't say or mean to suggest that they were the answer. There is no full-proof resolution here.

Drugs will be available in almost any high school at rates that would really alarm most parents. I wouldn't limit it to private schools.

Personally, I think Magnet schools are some of the best learning environments for life and studies, but that is from comparisons with friends that attended them. I didn't have the option to go because there was only one school in the city I lived during high school, but it was the 2nd best public school in the state.

I'd rather my kid experimented with drugs than had to fear violence. Meh, it didn't screw my life up.

I don't think private schools in England have big drugs issues. Just being a pansy issues

[quote=MalkyBoy;829915]Well I will say Ayr Academy is a hole, but my parents went there when it was not such a hole, or at least thats what their rose tinted glasses will tell them so it is shocking but its also a sign of the times. Still the school has been in existence in some form since 1000(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayr_academy) so its older than some countries so it must be doing something right.

That's so ****ed up, I'm really sorry to hear that. The problem is troubled kids don't realize they have support system to go to, and unfortunately some of them don't have any safety net at all.

Crazy shit happens in schools, it's really ridiculous. When I was in grade 10, I watched some guy run over someone on our school soccer field, dragging them across the pitch. An entire swarm of students circled the van, punched in the driver's window and pulled the guy out of the car where they beat the shit out of him.
