I just read a Paulo Cohelo book (a really pretentious author everybody seems to love. His books are like the Davinci Code for semi-intellectual people right now...) and that remnded me how much I hate when books, movies and TV shows goes all preachy and pretentious.

I mean it's OK if they suck, what really, really, REALLY pisses me of is when the pink moster of pretention comes in and destroys everything for me! I especially hate it when there's supposed to be a "message" that is just a way cliché moral lession you've already heard a thousand times already!

Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to let some steam out.

Anyone agree or disagree? Or does anyone have their own thing they just can't stand?
The only thing that's pretense free is life, unless you're fooling yourself. It's called fiction for a reason, and the only limit is how far your imaginaation takes you.

I'm so with you on that one plazzy! I f*ckin hate abstract art. Its just a fancy way of saying " I have no fu*cking talent " and when people act all sophisticated about it I get pissed. It's like " are you blind? can't you see that this painting is total bullshit, its not cutting edge or deep, it freakin sucks and my kid could draw that shit! "

What's funny is you can actually fail at being abstract. One of my profs once said I was being TOO abstract on one of our Abstract assignments.

HOW THE F*CK CAN YOU BE TOO ABSTRACT!?

Its because you actually have talent and your abstract art looks too forced. You have to have a genetic predisposition to sucking ass at drawing to be good at abstract. ( dare I say Picasso )

I find people that describe art as "pretentious" are just throwing a reaction (often out of insecurity) due to a lack of understanding, or a lack of willingness to look further into the art. People who watch Week End might be bored as hell and don't get the critique of capitalism, the intertextual references literature, paintings, other films, etc. If you're willing to read into piece of art with context, your appreciation of it will increase.

You shouldn't have to "look further" into art. If you need to it fails at what it is. If you look further into it because it's interesting or enjoyable at the outset then yes that is understandable and the art has suceeded.

It's like when someone tries to explain a crap joke. The explanation doesn't make it a good joke.

Not every art should be approached the same way. You won't listen to opera while driving to work. You must concentrate on it and you must know what is the topic of the aria you listen, in order to fully understand and enjoy the opera.

To fully appreciate political movies you must have some knowledge about politics.

Beauty of the art isn't always caught at the glance. Sometimes it takes a closer look.

I actually disagree. When I look at a piece of art, and it's being fed to me as "Abstract" I see through it way too easily. Sure, art should be deep, and meaningful, but somethings are just ridiculous.

Most abstract art have too much agenda, and the people who appreciate them are just going with a trend.

I personally think a piece of art should speak for itself, carry it's own weight and really spark inspiration. Splattering paint at a canvas everywhich way can be nice, but it's in no way deep (unless you understand balance of color, but that's hardly deep).
