Cursewords and cencoring - what do you think of it? (explicit content)

So I was just watching a music video on youtube, and MTV had totally butchered Eminems "the way I am". Shit, prick and even drug names had been cencored out! Not to talk about the word ****.

That's very weird to me, because in Sweden we simply don't have that, even for children (there are no cursewords on children's TV though). Maybe that's because we don't have as many words that are really that bad, I dunno. A word is after all only what you make it into, so if people chose to be less "offended" (most over used word EVER in my oppinion). But, I mean if they say ****, "****" or "shit" (the last btw is hardly even considered cursing in Sweden). On a record, aimed primarly for children, the singer could say cock/prick (whichever is worse, it's "kuk" in Swedish) without it being cencored.

Speaking of eminem, read on wikipedia that in a text there was a mention of a for year old with a slit throat. The reason for cencoring that even in the album version was "because child murder is offensive to parents". That sentence for some reason really cracks me up!

Not at all saying I'm against this, it's simply a different culture where companies are held responsible in a wider degree. I'm just really so unfamilliar with it now that I really think about it.

So, basically I wonder: What is your take on this curse word-business? For? against? Is it just me or does f*** look and sound like a way more bad word than "****"? I'd love for you guys to come with some sort of analysis/argument/explanation.

EDIT: Oh, holy crappola, this forum edit's away f-u-c-k!!! Seriously, what's the difference between writing f*** and writing the actual word; it still materealizes in the reader's head! I guess it's a standard forum setting to avoid too rude posts like mine

I swear constantly. Not an hour in the day goes by without me using one of these "curse words". To me, they're just words and they are meant to be used as an expression of your feelings, emotions, excitments etc. When you are using them as insults or put downs then yea, they are wrong.

There are places I go to where I respect their rules of not using swear words. Around kids I don't swear. But when I am in a domain where it is not banned, I will use that option freely.

Swearing in music shouldn't be anything to be surprised about. Its a part of alot of genres and it attracts people to that type of music.

people of professional manner shouldn't use swears as regular as a civilian but if they did swear, I wouldn't give a shit, it's just a word.

Dana White on the other hand, he is just laughable

Well I swear a lot but generally try to avoid it in public, especially when there are other people and kids nearby.

Just for clarification: Of course we don't use bad language around kids and I'd definately say our kids don't swear exceptionally much. What I wonder more about is what you think of the cencoring of a lot of cursewords (and sometimes the word heroine and weed) in music videos for instance. Are they really considered that bad/devastating/harmful?
For instance, the film "The Aristocrats" were allowed for 7 year olds here, since there was no actual violence or obscenities; people just talked about it (and in english, with no dubbing)! And I am pretty certain it was not age limit seven in most other countries, including the scandinavian ones! Hm, maybe I'm the strange one...

Well joppp, from what I've heard there are more curse words in some languages and less in others. Mine holds the second place in the world rankings(First is Hungarian). And I heard that Swedish doesn't have a large collection of swears and curses.

we tend to let the wordfilter take care of things unless someone is trying to circumvent it, or someone is directing their cussing at another member.
