Capital Punishment... Yea or Nay?

I hate heated debates, so I thought I'd bring this up.
So at dinner last night my mother asked me if I believed that capital punishment (death penalty) was a good or bad thing. I had to say that I would normally not be for it, but if it was a member of my family or someone that I was close to, I'd want to do it myself and would be all for it. So what are your opinions....are you always against it or for it, or do you have some selfish stipulations like I do?

I've always been for it, ever since I was a kid. Harsh I know. Does it work as a deterrent, evidence suggests otherwise but I just do not like how society foots the bill for murderers. I'm not saying it should be a blanket sentence for all murders but I think it should be used in special circumstances.

It doesn't work as a deterent for murder.

I think that people who **** or kill kids should be killed though. Unless sexy children are involved.

I agree, yes on certain circumstances. On one hand I feel murderers deserve what they get, but on the other hand if it's wrong for the murderer to murder, why is ok for the executioner to murder?

I'm all for the death penalty, in principle. The tough part is the application of how it is used and handled.

In what may be a paradox, I think that reform is better than punishment in most cases. But there are times when someone has shown that they simply have nothing left to offer society, that they are predators and parasites without hope of reform. In that case, why let them rot in jail? I think that they should be escorted into a field, dig their own ditch, and get a bullet in the head. Or... as China seems to be doing, "allow" them to commit one final act of generosity, in donating their organs to others.

That's a silly argument. It's also illegal for you to grab someone and lock them in your basement for twenty years, but it's fine for the police and government to do it. You couldn't give morphine to a six-year-old, but a doctor can. Societies rest powers in their governments under the assumption that they'll handle it fairly, but average guys just can't do much of the really fun stuff.

I think child serial rapists- should be killed and honestly as painful as possible so it doesn't just have to for murder.

I'm all for it. I actually think, and this is no joke, that they should give the option of flipping the switch to the closest family member of the victim.

You can let someone out of prison if they're found innocent at a later date; you can't if they're dead. They've kinda got around this by having a massive wait before execution, but I don't think I could ever support it on principal, even though there are a lot of people who deserve it and are a drain on the economy and society.
