Brandon Regional Health Authority Smacks Back At Brock

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle1439825/

She may give up several inches and a few pounds to UFC star Brock Lesnar, but the CEO of Brandon's regional health authority is taking on the martial-arts brute and his bruising views on Canadian health-care system.

“I take real exception to being referred to as a third-world country operation,” said Carmel Olson, responding Thursday to comments from Mr. Lesnar, the venom-spewing, bone-breaking heavyweight champion of the UFC.

On Wednesday, Mr. Lesnar marked his return to the octagon after a lengthy digestive ailment by slamming the medical treatment he received while visiting Brandon, Man. “It was like a Third World country,” he said of Brandon Regional Hospital. “My wife saved me. She got me out of there and drove 100 miles per hour to get me down to Bismarck, N.D.”

He was reportedly visiting Manitoba to hunt with his brother, who lives in the area. But when his painful diverticulitis flared up, he drove three hours to check into Brandon's hospital, a modern facility that serves much of western Manitoba and south-eastern Saskatchewan. But he quickly found that it wasn't up to his standard. “They had some machinery that wasn't working and couldn't do its job,” he said. “I needed to have [tests] done, so we went where they could be done.”

But Ms. Olson disputes the 6-foot-3 former wrestling star's version of events.

“ We have state-of-art equipment here. We are hardly a one-horse operation. ”— Carmel Olson, Brandon regional health authority CEO

“The attending physician was very qualified and very respected,” she said. “He's been in the business for more than 30 years. And he has the skills to diagnose a condition such as diverticulitis without a CT scan.”

She added that the Brandon facility deals with diverticulitis on a regular basis and that Mr. Lesnar was never misdiagnosed.

“We have checked this particular health record and were are quite confident that the correct diagnosis was given and the best course of treatment offered,” she said. “We have state-of-art equipment here. We are hardly a one-horse operation.”

She was flummoxed as to why the Mr. Lesnar took such exception to Brandon.

“Who knows, maybe he didn't like the bill.”

Towards the end of his press conference, Mr. Lesnar admitted that his comments were partly motivated by the ongoing political debate in the U.S. “The reason I'm saying that is because there's millions of people that don't want health care reform and I'm one of them,” he said. “I'm not a believer in socialism and I don't want that going on.”

After visiting Bismarck, he was transferred to the famed Mayo Clinic, a facility he said was superior to Brandon's hospital, an assertion that doesn't surprise Ms. Olson.

“I wouldn't be so arrogant as to compare ourselves to the Mayo Clinic, they're the experts,” said Ms. Olson. “But I really take exception to someone giving us that kind of media coverage for their own political reasons.”

Well, I wouldn't be calling him an asshole right away but I don't understand why he had a problem with their health care, it ranks 30th to our 37th in the World Health Organization.

thats my point.
the main reason he was bashing them was because he doesn't want universal health care back home. I think its pretty selfish of him to try and make this deceptive political statement out of a situaution like this.

As a Canadian citizen, I must say that in all I am satisfied with our Health care, but there are definitely a lot of room for improvement. I can completely understand what Brock is saying and I don't find any fault to his comments.

How I look at it is, in Canada basic health care is very good. However, if you have any major illness, the health care really shows its limitations. First off, most health coverages are free, which is a HUGE plus. However, the problem is, there are simply not enough physician and health care workers and thus the wait times take a long time.

For a person like Lesnar, a wealthy individual from USA, he most likely have one of the best health care packages available, of course the our health care will seem like "3rd world". I ran into a similar situation when my father was diagnosed with liver cancer. He had to wait almost half a year to do surgery. By the time 6 months was up the cancer had spread and he was unable to do surgery. We had to take him back to Hong Kong and pay for further treatment because things were just too slow here. However, we were lucky because we had the money saved up to pay for medical bills in Hong Kong. Most people would not be able to afford such procedures.

So thats the catch 22 for health care, its free, but slow... so if you can afford good health care, the US system will be much better. The key is if you can afford it.

Back to the Brocks statement, I completely understand because my father was furious he had to wait so long for his surgery when he was willing to pay for it right away. In his eyes, that cost him his life (he passed away last year). Brock prob went through something similar and I definitely have empathy for him.

This is a retarded move by Olson, why would she even dignify this with a response?

Lesnar is an American, a Republican, obviously he is strongly biased against socialist medicine already.

On top of that, what Lesnar knows about the efficient and economic administration of Health Care in any country, you could fit in his recently adjusted colon. You could not find a more uninformed opinion if you tried.

The lesson is don't take uninformed opinions on health care from American Repulicans with a two-digit IQ seriously.

If you want a good opinion on wrestling or how to put on muscle mass, ask Lesnar. If you want an opinion on anything else, you might as well ask one of his dogs.

I think as Canadians we are extremely fortunate with our health care, and its partly due to our neighbors to the south.

This is the way I see it;

As a Canadian, any small ailment can be treated for free. I dont mind waiting 10 mins for a doctor to see my sprained ankle or broken hand. Thats all its ever taken me.

Also, if Im a poor Canadian, at least I have the option to wait for a costly procedure.
If I am a rich Canadian, I can easily drive/fly a few hours south and no one in the US will be refusing my money.

If the US was not so close, maybe I would have a problem with our health care, but since I can easily go to many US hospitals, I do not worry about these things. My money there is just as good as anybodies.
