MMA isn't a Martial Arts style at all IMO. Its an eclectic mix of various forms of Martial Arts. However, there are gyms who teach "MMA" which is to say they teach Muay Thai, American Wrestling and Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and the act of using them together in the same room. But I think sometimes the line is blurred as to what is defined as a Martial Arts style and what is not.

Agreed....love the new sig Squirrel....

Thank you much. The old one worked nicely as a disclaimer if things got heated, but I prefer this one!

I had a huge argument over this with some MMA guys on some other forum. Those guys who train in MMA, insist that MMA is a martial art which has it's own methodology of learning, and that learning other arts if you wanna fight in MMA is bad because it will give you bad habits.

I can think of a few people like that whom I have met in person. There are idiots come in every size and shape. Best option for dealing with them in my experience: School them in the cage.

The only advantage I could think of from attending an "MMA" school is that you learn to combine what you already know in a controlled setting. In that regard I would be interested in visiting one only to get a better understanding of the various transitions--like the clinch to takedown, top control to top sub (also bottom on both)--those are areas where an "MMA" school would be useful IMO. But as the entire extend of a training program...I would imagine one of those schools would cause the bad habits.

MMA does have its own methodology of learning, if only to integrate boxing, a throwing/grappling art and a striking art.

The problem is with these guys, some of them think that it's best to start training in MMA without any background if you wanna compete in MMA. They actually think having a background can hinder your learning process because of those "bad habits".

And they believe that fighters without background are better than the ones with, and that in the future everybody will start training in MMA without building a base in some other sport. The thing is that club has a good fighter named Dragan Tesanovic who trained soccer() and strated training MMA and is busting up guys who are European medalists in Judo. They use him as a prime example.

But what irritates me the most is this. How can a sport be called MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, and have coaches from various arts teaching different aspects of the sport, and then be claimed that it is a special, unique martial art?
What MMA is , IMO is the integration of all arts that can together cover the 3 aspects of fighting, not a unique martial art.

Totally agree with you on everything but the number of aspects of an MMA competition I see it as 11 separate areas, though almost every Martial Art cover more than 1. There are a few guys who are just great natural athletes who can jump into MMA and be great.

But there are also those guys who started with just a single Martial Art as a child and grew and evolved into the tremendous machines they are today. I reference Mauricio Rua and Lyoto Machida as two. I don't think Dragan Tesanovic compares...

I just have to say that Machida and Shoguna aren't good examples. Machida has had experience in all 3 aspects of MMA: Striking(Karate), Clinch(Sumo) and Ground(BJJ). Also Shogun had experience in both MT and BJJ if I'm not mistaken.
And this guy, Dragan has just started out and is 5-0 in MMA. He is a big prospect they say.

I consider them good examples in that they trainined in one area for some time before mixing up the arts.

Machida trainined in Machida Karate for his whole life, and only several years in BJJ and Sumo.

Rua trainined in MT few a few years before learning BJJ.

They started as Martial Artists and became Mixed Martial Artists. Where as Dragan Tesanovic just hopped right into MMA.
