Start my new Tattoo tomorrow, any advice?

Well, after several months of waiting my appointment is finally here. i'm excited yet a bit nervous at the same time. i have a small tattoo but this one is going to be fairly large. Prob. going to be in the chair for 4-5 hours so I'm not really sure what to expect. Anyone have any advice or tips to get thru the time? The artist is a cool guy and I've seen his work so that's def. a major plus so I'm sure we'll have good conversation but I guess I just don't know what to expect from the day.

It all depends on where the ink is going to be... It could be a fairly relaxing or painful 4-5 hours. A lot of this also depends on if the artist has heavy hands and goes deep for the line work.

I have my full back done and a lot of it I literally fell asleep with. Places to watch out for that are painful are near the sternum, on the calves, the sides of the chest, and under the arm. Everywhere else is pretty easy to deal with. Let me know if you have any specific questions for the area the ink is going to be.

I have both upper quarter sleeves, both pectorals, my full back and my right calve done and am most likely going to get my shoulders capped off and done after my fight next week.

Thanks for the advise it's very helpful. I'm getting basically a little less than a 1/2 sleeve. There will be some on my bicep on the inside so I'm assuming that is going to hurt quite a bit. Do you bring anything with you like your Ipod or anything? I'm not planning on it at least for tomorrows visit.

No my artist had a TV and he would pop in a movie or music while he worked. The outer arm really doesn't hurt at all especially after the start of it. After a bit your body will start to pump out endorphines and the pain will dull a decent amount. This won't be enough for the inner arm though as it is very tender and the nerves are more dense there. The back of the arm is a little worse than the outer arm but no where compared to the inner arm. Just make sure to eat before and drink lots of water. DO NOT drink any alcohol tonight and try not to take anything that thins the blood as it will make the work more difficult for the artist and the final result won't be as good. Controled and steady breathing will help a lot when it gets painful and just stay focused. Not sure what other advice I can give but hope it helps. Music may help though!

Take some candy or gum along. That is a pretty long session and even though it is rather easy to endure the pain your sugar levels could drop. You could get lightheaded and possibly even faint. This could happen even if you find the experience pleasurable like I do. Make sure you eat a good meal before hand. Hope it all works out for you and you get some kick-ass ink!

I don't have much of a problem with them at all, but I know people who do. What I do, is I try to keep a conversation going with the artist to keep my mind off of it. You could always take an ipod or something to listen to music and try not to focus on the tattoo.

Another thing that I do, (If it doesn't weird you out to see yourself bleeding and swelling a bit) I like to watch him do the tattoo if possible. I enjoy watching it a lot actually, it is pretty neat.

No painkillers or alcohol at all beforehand. It will thin your blood and make it bleed more thus making it harder for the artist to work as efficiently. Just do your best to cope with the pain, and do things to keep your mind busy.

Trust me, it is well worth it.

Well, I made it thru without any issues. The gum idea was key!!! When it was super annoying chomping away on the gum def. got my mind off it. Can't wait to get the color added as that will make the whole thing.

Thanks for the tips and it doesn't hurt it's just really annoying. Except there were a few areas that did suck pretty bad.

Just to prepare you the color is going to be the worst part. Just dont drink or smoke ganja before hand. Drinking will make you bleed more and the ganja will make you feel the pain more.

It's funny that you say this because the artist said the color isn't as bad as the outline. He said the outline is worse because you're putting the ink down much darker than you do with the color. He said the outline is thicker which is why it is worse. Either way it's not that bad. Can't wait to get this thing completed though.
