It just seems bizarre. They have the truly amazing technology to travel between star systems, but they don't have basic spectroscopy/spectrometry to discern the prevalent chemicals in a planet before travelling all the way there and to its surface? We have been able to do that with our relatively simple technology for some time now, its just a telescope and some math.
And yeah, you do bring up a good point. They attack at night, did the dew burn their skin like a mid-day sun on a ginger kid? I mean you'd think they'd at least go back for rain coats given that a light shower would decimate their whole army.
