You have the right to freedom of speech as a means of protection from the government. It's a freedom that we have in America that most western countries still don't allow. You defame someone in France or Germany for their religion or ethnicity, it's a criminal offense. In that regard, yes in America you can still say whatever you want.
However, you're a representative of your company, in the office, at home, or in a bar. Regardless of YOUR definition of the term "Jap", it's offensive to many others. It might all seem trivial to you, but that's most likely because your a white male who has had little experience in being belittled for who or what you are.
My only advise is to find out what your rights are in your state, and to promptly go through your facebook friends list to do some spring cleaning.
