Coroner: Amy Winehouse died from drinking too much alcohol

Quote:

The cause of Amy Winehouse’s death has been revealed. According to a coroner’s report, the soul singer died with lethal amounts of alcohol in her blood—more than five times the British drunk-driving limit.

Coroner Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of “death by misadventure,” saying Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning after she resumed drinking following weeks of abstinence.

“The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels [of alcohol] was her sudden and unexpected death,” Greenaway said.

Police Detective Inspector Les Newman, who was called to Winehouse’s London home in July, said empty vodka bottles were found around her bedroom.

The “Rehab” singer had started drinking again in the days before her death, according to her doctor, Christina Romete. She was “tipsy but calm” the night before her death and had not spoken of suicide.

Romete had prescribed drugs including the sedative Librium to help Winehouse cope with the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, but the coroner said these did not cause her death.

Winehouse’s family was relieved to finally find out what happened to the 27-year-old. “The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time,” stated Winehouse family spokesman Chris Goodman.
Rap-Up

How much alcohol could've she really drank? I'm sure i drink (when i drink) more than a normal person should.

To get a 5 times the UK limit (.08bac) score which would be .40bac, assuming she weighed 120lbs.. She could get there in 10-11 shots of .40%alc vodka or whiskey etc taken in 45-60minutes.

Drinking over 4-5 hours, she could have had 14-17 shots/beers etc.

It doesn't sound like a ridiculous amount, but size is huge in volume drinking. That and a woman's body composition is generally a bit less capable of handling this kind of alcohol consumption.

Edit: Truly a sad story

Considering her state of health, she was probably more around 90lbs. Also, the folks who saw her the night before report that she was already intoxicated. Looks like she went on a long binge.

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree... As long as I don't bore you and I spark a moment of thought, my goal is achieved.

After years of alcohol abuse, someone with such a low body weight is definitely at a high risk for alcohol poisoning, despite their tolerance being higher.

Even so, if Amy were here, I know she'd want me (a fellow contralto) to pour a drink and sing, "I told you I was trouble/You know that I'm no good."

I still dont get how people were so shocked or saddened by this. She was an addict. Addicts either get clean or they die. Ive known plenty, im sure most of us have. This woman constantly disrespected her fans by showing up to her shows unable to perform. She made plenty of money and could have gottent the help she might have needed (big shocker here, a shit load of people do it without any help, way more then you would think). Now that she died young, she is going to be romanticized and remembered as some kind of genius despite the fact that she was really just an over indulged waste of talent. For some reason, the overly sympathetic reaction to her death annoys the hell out of me. Maybe im just jaded by the fact that I have known numerous people that have died from alcohol or drugs, but even when it is someone I know, it is incredibly hard to feel bad for them anymore. Now that the craze has been to label addcition as a disease for the past little while, this idiots use it as a crutch and try to let it be a simple cure all explanation for their self-serving behavior and irresponsible ways. Oh well, maybe im just a dick.

I don't wish for or take pleasure in the misfortune of anyone, but I agree - it is difficult to feel badly for an individual who had multiple warnings and opportunities to turn her life around, and instead chose to write a song essentially mocking the idea of 'rehab' and those attempting to help her. RIP and all that, but you did this to yourself.
