I think it's because the price of everything is going up but the amount of money people are making isn't going up in the same proportions. This means people don't have the money to spend on useless crap which is what boosts the economy. If theres money not going in then the economy suffers, lowering the value of the dollar. This is one of the reasons why they gave us stimulus packages because they were hoping everyone would go spend that money and put more money back into the economy to try to bring us out of the recession we are in.
