I need computer help
 

SO yeah my main laptop i use has completly crapped out on me. I cant even log in under safe mode to have my windows return to a previous saved session. All it does when i turn it on regularly or in safe mode is go to a black screen with the mouse icon that i can move around, screen saver still works too lol. They have windows vista installed on it.

anybody got any suggestions

I think this happened to me a few years back on an older laptop.

I was able to open stuff with CRTL+ALT+DEL and I think I could use the windows key to open the start menu.

Can't remember how but opening windows explorer (the file manager) through crtl+alt+del should allow you to open programs.

Also, If I remember correctly, I wiped my comp when this happened. Bare in mind though, I wipe my comp regularly so probably wanted to anyway.

Could be a hardware issue. Like your graphics chip could have died. More likely though, it is a software issue or some kind of corruption.

Do you have a recovery disk? Vista itself is by far the worst Operating System ever created. I recommend, if you don't have a recovery disk, to pick up an OEM version of Windows XP or 7. Then do a complete reformat. Of course you will be losing all of your data. Hopefully you have it backed up. I generally reformat several times per year, but all my stuff is on a backup hard drive or on the cloud somewhere.

Before you spend the money on a new OS, look hard for that recovery disk. You can reformat with it as well, but they will still put a lot of useless crap on your PC. At least this way you can find out if it is a Hardware issue. Because if it is a hardware issue a new OS will do you no good. You just have to troubleshoot all the possibilities until you find the issue.

Thanks guys, yeah I went to the IT department of my job and told a guy i know that works in there my troubles and he is going to give me a recovery disk to see if it works

and yes i know vista sucks ass, i am a xp guy all the way ...actually i liked 98 even better but xp was great too unfortunatly this was my girls comp and i had no choice in the matter

its just weird, i am usually the person that helps people with computer problems but i cant even get into safe mode so i was freakin clueless

Download & burn to disc; run the disc at boot.

I've got a few computers running again with these simple tools. (many shops actually just use these as well haha)

I had this happen to me a couple years ago, mine was the CPU overheated and it had to be taken in to bet fixed.

my it guy is looking at it, seams like he is gunna just try and use a winddows disk as a fix/repair disk. he says he has some other things he can try bit he was gunna start with those

if he cant get it working i will try a few of the things mentioned here

- You might have uninstalled some important Windows programs inadvertently.

- hardware issue. You can run a diagnostics by pressing F10 as soon as you start your computer. Keep pressing it til it goes a screen where it gives you the option to do a systems recover, restore, or hardware diagnostics. Then you can see if there's any errors. Takes an hour to run a scan.

- software issue - virus. If this is the case you need to restore your company to the original factories setting, but save your programs. Then immediately get an anti-virus program. I'm using Mcafee now. Ironically I had four different programs running (Microsoft Essentials/Advanced Systems Protector/Spysweeper/Malwarebytes) and it took up too much of my processing power.
Norton and AVG are terrible. Kasperskys is the best as it's all in one.

All in all it can be fixed manually or simply pay a technician to take a look at it.
