Russell Simmons
what do you guys think about russell simmons saying that certain words should be banned from hip-hop lyrics?
my thought is, whatever they are, they made him a multimillionaire, so this is coming kind of late.

you can't ban a word. the only way to get rid of them is change the society's thinking in which they originate. If people still use them readily, banning it won't do anything. and besides the free speech matter, it's just stupid. you can't ban a word from something that is supposed to be a matter of expression. that's like saying, "say what you want, but just don't say it that way."
if you don't change the people who accept the word, the word will never die!

I was going to say....c'mon Russ.
If you try and ban a word from a rappers vocabulary, you might as well just shut down the entire rap / hip-hop genre. Because...if by chance you get a word or two banned, then the mud-slide will begin and the FCC will keep it moving...and that lists of words will do nothing but increase rapidly.
Was there a list of words he suggested? I'd like to see it.

He wants to ban 3 words;
F***
B****
N*****
By banning the words, he means the rappers will not be able to use them on an album. These 3 words are already banned from being played on air by the FCC. The rap industry as talked about doing this for awhile but none of the big names(russel simmons) have been on board until now. This is the aftermath of the Imus situation, Maya Angleou, Oprah, Barack Obama, and other high powered African Americans want to change or do something about the rap industry. The one rapper who keeps getting mentioned is Snoop Dogg but he rarely raps anymore, he usually does collaborations now. Not sure why they single him out.

He just said they should be banned from the clean versions of the albums.

that's so redundant for him to say that they should be banned from the clean versions of the albums - wouldn't those words be removed from the edited versions anyway?!?!??!?!
