The Human animal is amazing
watching a show about the first year of a human beings life. on the instincts. if you take a 1 hour old baby, hold it up and have its feet touch the ground, it will motion walking! a few months later, it won't, but if you dangle it in a bath of water, it will do it again since the gravity is less on the muscles. they're instinctvely drawn to walk.
the grabbing one is old
but get this, scientists at yale have proven that newborn infants can do math.
they did a puppet show thing where they had two dolls, took one away, and left one. the action goes on behind a screen that pops up, by the way. the baby looked, then eventually looked away. they put the doll back and secrety took it away behind that blockage, and when they showed the baby the one doll, it freaked out. they have data that all babies will respond this way. they instinctively know basic arithmatic!!!
they knew that taking one away from two, but when adding it again, the other wasn't there, they reacted.
there's a whole slew of crazy shit that links our instincts to other living relatives, like the instinct to grab is from when we had to hold on to our mothers body hair, like apes do. or when being startled, the arms and legs go out grasping, like when a baby monkey falls through a tree and reaches out to grasp, right after birth!!!
simply astounding

there was more to it. but even so, it showed that we're not just blank slates. that we can recognize when something isn't right!

human newborns can also perform the amazing feat of shitting out the equivalent of 3/4 of their body weight hourly!!!!!! No not really, it just seems that way.
That arms-and-legs grasping is called a Moro reflex. newborns who can only see well between 8-12 inches away from a face can still recognize their parents by the sound of their voice and by smell.
No, I didn't learn this on a documentary. (pee-wee herman voice) I lived it.

You know. It's still amazing that we ever managed to develop linguistics.

We saw a video of this in my Psychology class at school. The faces the babies make are priceless.

One other cool instinct is the rooting reflex, which is when you touch a baby on the cheek, it will automatically turn and search for a nipple.
