while i do believe scarface is an excellent movie, i believe that goodfellas is one of the best movies ever made. it is a directorial masterpiece, it is perfectly cast, perfectly narrated, its sense of pace is without flaw, it beautifully captures the time periods in which the story occurs. i simply cannot speak highly enough of this film, and the fact that it was passed over for best picture is a blemish on The Academy in my opinion.

Reason: word omission.

I selected Goodfellas, mainly because I'm more partial to De Niro and Pesci working as a tandem, but De Palma's Scarface is a classic.

Scarface is vastly overrated and it's been ruined by rappers and popular culture.
Goodfellas wins, hands down. Plus I like De Niro better anyway.

NO Doubt...Goodfellas...scarface teaches you to be a drug dealer, Goodfellas, teaches you about the way you should carry yourself.....dont rat, keep your mouth shut, etc....

GREAT idea for a thread!
Anyways, Goodfellas wins this one. From the cut cross camera angles down to the piano solo of Layla near the end. Marty is a genious when it comes to directing. Even though most people would say De Niro steals the movie, it is mostly because of the directing of Martin. He utalizes a lot of close ups and a lot of scenes emphansizing the personality of his character. Ray Liotta did exactly what his character needed to do in the movie, he very rarely overacted and played it safe which was ok in my oppinion. Joe Pesci did a great job doing exactly what he is stereotyped for. Being this crazy short guy, while it is simular (although a tad better) to Casino, he isn't bringing anything brand new. In a way Scorsese was trying to elaborate on Robert and, once again, make him the break through actor. Not to say that De Niro doesn't deserve it though, Marty just saw a pattern in Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, etc.) and kept it going.
As for Scarface, the first hour is one of the best in the 80's. Just completely awesome, simple, anda tad bit gory. But from there it just...slows down. Of course Pacino keeps you interested, it just couldn't keep the pace like the first hour did. The end of the movie closes of very well, but do to average directing, and a nearly one man show (The other actors were good, but it is all super centered around Pacino) it falls short of GoodFellas.

I went with Goodfellas, the acting was just amazing and I don't mind watching several times in a year whereas Scarface gets bores the crap out of me except for the last scene and the chainsaw scene.
